SERPENT ECLIPSE "THE SEVEN DESIRES AND WOLVES' BLOOD"
Cybernetic black metal from the blackest pits of digital hell. This (one man?) project utilizes lots of technology (i.e. drum machine, sequenced synths, etc.) to add a truly nocturnal, post-industrial feel to its blazing black metal sound. But the main focus is undoubtedly on the razor sharp guitar riffing (full of some really impressive guitar hooks) and the vicious, overpowering black metal vocals. Most of the songs are rather blast-oriented, with the furious, yet very clean guitar playing delivering an endless stream of aggression (with occasional atonal overtones that reminded me a bit of Satyricon). From time to time, everything slows down towards more ritualistic speeds, where the gothic / orchestral influence shine more. Occasionally the two are mixed together, as this outfit is not afraid to use the drum machine to its fullest potential, coming up with drum patterns than any human drummer would have a very hard time playing. But the main strength of this album is nevertheless the excellent guitar playing and truly memorable hooks, all further enhanced by the sheer originality of Serpent Eclipse's sound. The production is quite professional (despite this being pretty much a self-released album) and allows both the aggression and the darkness of the band to come through. You can hear some MP3 samples at the label's site: http://www.voidsector.com and I urge you to check them out. Is Serpect Eclipse the best U.S. black metal band right now? I think so...excellent underground release overall, can't believe these guys aren't signed yet to a bigger label. A band to watch for the future, there are great things ahead of them.
