Artist description
New York City born and bred, Korean-American ISUL
KIM brings the rare face of an Asian-American to
the singer-songwriting scene with an earnest,
honest voice and blues-y, rockified acoustic
pieces. Isul emanates a multi-dimensional but
never incoherent approach to music. Ranging from
sultry, funky and intense rockers to ben
harper-like ballads to playful ditties, Isul’s
songs entertain a diverse audience. With a voice
that sparkles like a young girl inhaling life
whole, Isul brings out the best with melody lines
that seem catchy but also offer a challenge and
surprise every once in a while.
With a modest, percussive guitar style, coupled
with clever, unique, and poignant lyrics, Isul
(as one fan said) “takes you by the hand through
her songs, so you really get the picture”.
Whether she’s pining after a tortured love, or
satirically responding to her NYC upbringing,
Isul delivers a dynamic, yet intimate performance.
But, feel at home with her, with her girlish
smile, infectious laugh, selfless humor.

Artist History
Isul spent her earlier years playing classical
piano and vocalizing in choirs and a cappella
groups. Initially inspired by folk singers, such
as Joni Mitchell and Dar Williams, Isul started
writing a few folk tunes in high school as
birthday presents for friends. She stole a guitar
from a brother out of spite, but then turned her
piano fingers to six-string pickin’ and strummin’
bliss. In college, after a year and a half as the
lead vocalist for an alternative rock band in
Cambridge, MA, Isul caught the rock-star bug.
She mixed that newfound love for “rockin’ with
the boys” with her folk upbringing, tossed in a
few strokes of blues, and emerged with a new, solo
musical mission.
