Artist description
One of Seattle’s most distinctive voices, critically
acclaimed Ben Black, recalls Little Jimmy Scott
and Chet Baker in the timbre and pitch of his voice.
With full emotional expression he moves effortlessly
through the counter-tenor range."Singularly Gorgeous,"
says Jazz Times Magazine. His latest release,
“Remembered Faces/Private Places, opens a treasure
chest of international wonders and surprise
material; where jazz, pop, and musical standards
all live comfortably together. The songs speak about
being kinder to each other, on an individual level
and to society as a whole. With songs from Armenia,
Ireland, Japan, and Latin America as well as the
U.S., the play list tackles different languages and difficult
issues. With a strikingly personal style and
hauntingly beautiful voice, Ben Black distinguishes
himself from the rest of the pack.

Artist History
The earliest musical influences for me were in
listening to my parents' records. My mother was
Armenian and German, my father, Slovenian. I was
influenced by my Mom's love of Sergio Mendes and
Brasil 66, The Singers Unlimited, Nina Simone,
and so many of the great musicals of the era.
As a young teen I uncovered Mom's old recording
of "Sarah Vaughn at Kelly's". This album and
Ella's, " A Tisket a Tasket" were a real spiritual
awakening for me.
