Artist description If I had to pick two words to describe Aviv Roth as a musician, I'd say dark. And deep. Dark eyes, dark hair, deep, dark complex melodies and lyrics with a dark sense of humor. With vocals that range from raspy to deeply melodious, Aviv takes on the persona of characters that infuse his songs with a touching emotionality and a level of intellect that makes his songs catchy, but definitely not simple. In "Whiskey" and "Take A Chance" we feel the differing sides of unrequited love; in "Used Cars", we see the plight of the underdog portrayed with insight and honesty; and in "Managed Care Is Evil" and "Get Off Your Ass" we also see a bit of advocacy and humor, which when offered hand in hand never land amiss. Sung with passion and grit, Aviv's songs vary in tone relative to the message of the music, and Aviv even has the capacity for whimsy and fun as he plays with old favorites from Schoolhouse Rock and other TV chesnuts. A very talented guitar player, he can handle cover songs by other musicians like Peter Mulvey, using intricate fingerings not generally attempted by your average folk performers. All in all, a performance by Aviv Roth is quite a treat to see. - Deborah Lack
