Artist History
Before Nathan and Mike joined the band, Todd, Blair and Patrick had been jamming since Mid-2000. All the members in the band were new to playing their instruments when the band formed- Todd and Patrick had only been playing guitar for a year. Blair had been playing Drums for about a year. Michael played drums , but had only been learning bass for 3 months before the 2001 Rockquest and Nathan had never sang a note until we asked him one day.
When the band was formed the main goal was to enter the 2001 cokesmokefreerockquest competition which held the otago heats on April the 27th. The band had prepared for the event by practising alot. We played the song 'solitude' but after watching the other bands, we didn't think we would get into the top 14 for the Regional finals. After the judge called us out, the band couldn't beleive it and we got to play 2 songs - 'solitude' and 'smoked glass' in front of 500 screaming people at the student union on May 18th (2001). Even though the band didn't win anything or came anywhere in the r-quest the night was a real buzz and was dubbed 'one of the best nights of our lives'. The rockquest had gave us a real confidence boost and we decided to push on and try and get noticed more in dunedin by playing some gigs etc..
We got to play our first gig on July 17th (2001) when we opened for a local punk band - Blistering Tongues at their Cd release gig held at Arc Cafe (Dunedin). The band enjoyed it and got a good response from the 18+ crowd but we didn't like it as much as playing at the regionals because of equipment failure and didn't have hundreds of screaming people moshing hard!
September of 2001 was very busy! We got our guitar teacher Brad Martin, to record two songs at Dunedin's Cellar Bar: 'Smoked Glass' and 'Glitches' during 3 days (24th - 27th). We were extremely happy with the final product as Brad dubbed himself an Amateur and wanted to practise on someone. Since then, the recording has got really popular especially 'Glitches' which gets played at practically every party that Recoil go to!
Also on the same week of the recording, Recoil got a gig at the Dunedin Musicians Club on the Thursday (27th). Gig went off well, alot of people gave us heaps of support and enjoyed our music which was great to hear! During Mid-October , Todd and Patrick got interviewed to promote the 2 recorded songs on student radio Inferno 100.3 FM, got heaps of support by them. They played the songs regularly and was really weird hearing our own music being played on radio in the Six form commen room.
During the rest of 2001, the band had a bit of a break and we started getting back into it at the start of this year in February. We came up with a new song called 'To whom it may concern' which ended up being the song that we performed at the cokesmokefreerockquest 2002 Otago Heats. So before the heats, Recoil went back into practise mode but didn't go as hard at it than with the previous year with 'Solitude'.
During March, the band also worked on a cover song and it was of System of a Down's 'ATWA'. Sounded really good. Halfway through the month we were called on to entertain the stage in the octagon (central Dunedin). As part of Bayfields attempt at the Tearaway competition "School Spirit" in which Bayfield won recently. We managed to draw a good crowd and played well.
April of this year has been the real turning point for Recoil!
We performed well at the Otago Heats of the Rockquest (April 19) and got into the Regional Finals. On the same night we got to open for Auckland band STERIOGRAM who we got to meet at school the day before. They listened to 'Glitches' and asked us to play at there gig. When we went on-stage approx 250 highschool students greeted us like rockstars and moshed hard! Was a really great experience. The members of Steriogram were really supportive of us and complemented on our sound which was cool! April 27th was the night of the 2002 Otago Regional Finals and after looking at the mark that we got in the heats we thought that our original plan of getting third could be a bit challenging. We went out on-stage with nothing to lose and played 'To whom it may concern' and then 'Glitches'. Enjoyed it lots! Then came the wait and eventually the dreaded announcement at the end of the night. Suddenly the band got called for the Coke Original Song Award for 'To whom it may concern'. We were really pleased coming away with $100. Then came the 1st place announcement after Matildas Battery got 2nd. RECOIL! were called and we were over the moon! Great night and it has given us some publicity through ODT and Channel 9. Currently the band is working hard at getting into the national semi finals. 2002 has been a great year for the coil and we hope it gets better!
Thanks for taking the time to read this REALLY LONG! Bio.
