Press Reviews
From the Milwaukee Journal (circa 1984):
Their calling card reads "The Sneaks - Rock N' Roll"
The description is right on the money. In a recent
stint at the New Main St. Saloon, the young, energetic
group put on an impressive show that touched the
many boundaries of rock.
Before forming The Sneaks, all four members - Mike
Kavanaugh, Mike Young, Mike Koniezcka and Bryce Hass -
toiled locally in several no-name bands. Now, after a
year and a half together, they are performing almost
every weekend and beginning to establish a solid reputation.
Most often they play at The Landing, 1100 E. Kane Pl.,
where sometimes as many as 10 musicians will sit in with them.
Says Hass, the lead singer, "Often we don't even know their
names, but if they want to play we welcome them.
It's no wonder area musicians want to join in.
During the four hour set at the New Main St. Saloon,
2943 S. 13th St., the Sneaks did well with almost everything
they tried, combining cover versions of hard rock
and blues rock staples with vibrant original
material that could have commercial potencial.
The band is strictly guitar-oriented: it consists
of bass, rhythm and lead guitars, and drums. Hass
was outstanding on Santana's "Black Magic Woman,"
and when all three guitarists fused for the long
and difficult instrumental section, the result was
extraordinarily satisfying. The group also sparkled with
another Santana number, the jazz-blues instrumental "Europa."
The Sneaks spiced their act with sophisticated
chatter that belied their ages - early 20s.
Two original tunes written by Hass, "Fool's Game
and "Misdirected Love," were catchy and drew a good
response from the crowd. "Game" has one of those
infectious melodies that lingers in your mind.
The mark of any good band is the ability to play
others' hits without simply impersonating the
artist. The Sneaks retained their identity
throughout the evening, even when tackling
material by Stevie Ray Vaughan, George
Thorogood and Dire Straits. |
