Artist History
Denise's love for music began at an early age. Her first memories are of watching her mother play piano in her grandmother's living room and being awe inspired; enraptured with the sound, continuous and steady,..beautiful,...
Growing up in Newark, DE, Denise received classical voice/guitar instruction from the age of 14. She was always involved in some kind of project; whether it was as a lead singer of a metal band, a member of a madrigal choir, or a guitarist in the high school jazz band,..music was as much a part of her life as it was a part of her soul.
In 1994, Denise graduated from Berklee College of Music with a degree in Music Production and Engineering. She moved to New York City and began working as an intern at Right Track Studios. She is now a staff engineer at Kampo Studios, where she was able to record, produce, and mix her first full length record entitled "Beauty Lied".
Denise's songs are all self-contained snapshots of her world. Songs like "15", "In July", and "He Said, She Said" are lyrical examples of the trials and struggles of one moving from the bottom up. Songs like "Only for my Sake" or "It's What You Said" are lyrical examples of a twenty-something woman trying to find love and acceptance in a cold city. The title track tells the true story. "Beauty Lied" culminates the theme of the record. In Denise's own words, "Beauty Lied is about that little voice in your head which says, you're not good enough, or pretty enough or strong enough,..we live in a world where women, especially, are judged by their outward appearance mainly; their inner beauty is secondary. For some, beauty will always be allusive,..but, hopefully, not for me,.."
Aside from completing her first record, she continues to help other independant artists in their efforts as a producer/engineer/songwriter. Her songwriting ability spans many different genres and she hopes to share her music with a wider audience.

Press Reviews
~~~ Listening to this CD is like taking a stroll through Ms Barbarita's thoughts: Hard rockers, melacholy memories & personal declarations wrapped up in an incredible singing voice & great, phat arrangements! This reviewer first fell in love with her voice - a strong, sensual, espressive & supple alto. Add to that her mastery of these INCREDIBLE harmonies (see 'A Warm Place' in particular...) & you realize that honey is gifted! Another thing one notices is that Denise is NOT interested in the obvious - She wants you to work when it comes to her lyrics. On any record, that might be a bad thing. But since she sounds so damned good, it just draws you in! But I have to say she did the first most important thing on ANY album - she wrote some GREAT songs! My personal favorites on the album are 'In My Darkest Hour,' 'A Warm Place,' 'Only For My Sake,' 'On Your Side' & the title cut. Personally, its good to come across a record with a point of view that Im interested in listening to. She made one & I'm already looking forward to next one!
~~~ I just love this cd. I can't get enough of it! It rocks, it soothes, it has it all. Denise Barbarita has an awesome voice and an even more awesome talent for writing songs with meaning and substance.
~~~ A Great Talent! A Great CD! In an industry with so little ingenuity Denise Barbarita is an amazingly fresh exception. Her songs are great, the hooks are awesome, and the amazing lyrics turn the songs inside out. Lyrically she takes us into her web and speaks to that little voice inside us all. Vocally she brings her uniquely natural sound to a record filled with passion, pain and experience. It would do us all some good to listen to her songs, we might learn something!
