Artist History
Gypsy Davy was the phoenix that rose from the ashes of two of the most talented, worst sounding bands produced at Fairmont Senior High School in the 1980's. "Dont Forget" (Greg Mason and Scott "Skip" Davis' high school punk band) and "Armed & Dangerous" (Jarrod DeVault's high school rock band) joined forces and added Greg's cousin's ex-husband, Mark "Bruce" Wyatt. It was love at first sight considering Bruce can't see very well. After "borrowing" another friend's drum set, and acquiring The Loan Which Shall Never Be Repaid from their manager (Greg's dad), the band played and played and drank wine and played and drank beer and played, and became reasonably popular in the Fairmont/Morgantown area. However, the boys just couldn't seem to learn to play a polka for purposes of the Knights of Columbus and J.D. lost his mind and went off to the Army. Bruce went on a permanent vacation, Jimmy Buffett-style, leaving Greg and Skip to their vices and soon Skip left, too. It seemed that Gypsy Davy would roam no more.
Years passed...Bruce formed "Skinner Box" and did the South Carolina beach circuit with pre-rich and famous "Hootie and the Blowfish" while J.D. played in the sand of Desert Storm and did some doo-wop singing with the Kansas group "Streetside". J.D.'s younger brother Seth DeVault learned to play the guitar and started playing with Greg who had been writing songs for himself and for "Skinner Box". Eventually, J.D., Seth and Greg formed "Axis" with Seth's high school friend, Shane Klingensmith. A brief but storied engagement left "Axis" well rehearsed, but not well-compensated, and the boys again drifted apart to pursue such frivolities as a small business, law school, "Hooch", and the various trials of life.
Then, in 2001, Greg and J.D. finally decided to resurrect something of their musical pasts and record some songs as a Christmas gift for relatives. They found the very talented Dave Loss to record and engineer the project. Through powerful persuasion, they lured Bruce back to Fairmont to sing. Thus, "Gypsy Davy" was reborn, and it's legacy to date is the debut album, Right On Time This Time, a collection of Appalachian blues songs past and present about being a "Davy" in a cold, hard world. Look for their second album soon, Desperation Station which is currently in pre-production. |
