Music Dish 3-31-00Artist: Stevo's BluGruVuDu Title: Rantings & Ravings Label: BluGruVuDu Musick Genre: Alternative Even if you can't get past the name, this album is worth lending your ear to. Stevo's BluGruVuDu definitely has plenty to rant and rave about, everything from Kmart shotguns to mohogany popsicle sticks. And he even mentions a credit to mental illness. What more could you want? How about some really good tunes? Well, they're here too- Stevo shows his stuff in "Betrayed" with unusual vocals that erupt in the chorus. He seems to lean towards the heavy guitar-laden riff style, but in some songs I hear a lot of funky style bass undertone. The contrast makes for an interesting listen. Not convinced yet? Just listen to some of these song titles..."Decapitating Jim," "Pin Cushion Throne," and my favorite, "Drooling on a Kmart Shotgun." That one's got kind of a hillbilly intro that explodes into the heavy guitar and then goes back again. I was honestly a little freaked at the deranged things I found on this album (and still am after listening) but I think that was Stevo's idea. Excellent riffs and leads. I would definitely light up a bud with this one. I like the 60's influence he has brought into the 90's. Very well done.” ATAJam Rag Vol. 15 No. 4 April 2000Stevo’s BluGruVuDu“Rantings & Ravings”“Rating: 6/10 Very good guitar work! This guitar player must be the master of the wah-wah (do you give lessons?) Top three songs: Walking in Mud, Moment of Clarity and Allah.” - Jeff GlennSTEVO’S BLU-GRU-VU-DURantings and Ravings Who the heck is Steve Kalniz? And why doesn’t he have a band? Stevo’s BluGruVuDu (lose that name!) has self-released Rantings and Ravings, a funky, quirky 13 song exercise in grooved out, eccentric guitar rock. Kalniz sang and played everything (except the drums, which were provided by journeyman Sean Shacklett), but the usual one-man-band self-indulgence factor hardly exists here- these tunes are keepers! I mean, “Decapitating Jim” and “Drooling on a Kmart Shotgun” would be worth it just for the titles, but they rock as well, as does “A Moment of Clarity” and “Blame”, which combine wacka-chew-wacka guitar with a frantic, wild-eyed vocal. The anthemic “Mahogany Popsicle Stick” (which could be a single) and mellow “Allah” balance out the more frantic tunes, making for a dynamic record. Kalniz plays with a fluid, bluesy fee, and sings like a cross between that guy from Creed and David Byrne (or is it just me?) I confess I’m not entirely sure what the deal with this CD is - if Kalniz just made it to get his jollies and wanted some feedback, or if he’s got a band and some gigs lined up, or if the disc is available in stores. If you see it around, though, pick it up - this guy rocks. (3326 Indian Oaks Lane Toledo OH 43617) Keith Bergman“The Glass Eye” Volume 6 Issue 6 September 1999 |
