Press Reviews
FACE MAGAZINE June 23-July 6, 1999Into the Unknown (CD)Author Unknownc/o 148 Bolton StreetPortland, ME 04102 Dave Brochu, the owner of the sadly defunct Shooter Pub in Westbrook, tipped us off to Author Unknown last summer. “Kids”, he said, “but they’ve got a lot of energy and really get a crowd going.” A year later here’s their CD, a collection of superb songs that suddenly casts Author Unknown as major local players. “Lost Love” is a taste of everything that’s good about the band, a heartbreak song that isn’t weepy, just slow and deliberate, revealing layer upon layer of musical nuance. Vocalist Michelle McLauchlan delivers the lyrics as if she’s hurt but not shattered. Jay Reynolds gently picks a melody over Mike Morin’s and Paul Gauer’s restrained bass and drums, while multi-instrumentalist Michael Ouellet blows a sad clarinet accompaniment (and a brief solo after the second verse). Eventually the rhythm section kicks in and brings it home. The same good things apply to almost every one of these 11 originals. All the songs are about something. “What A Shame” perfectly chronicles the dissipation of a partner. McLauchlan is an energetic singer who drives home every lyric without over-singing. Reynolds and Ouellet flavor the songs rather than dominating them, sometimes with guitar and other times with horns (Reynolds also plays flute). Essentially, the songs are the stars of the show and they are good enough to deserve that treatment. Further, the band members - all five of whom have a hand in the songwriting - are smart enough to understand that. Author Unknown has something really good going. Into the Unknown is focused and entertaining, and this band only needs to stay on its present path to reap the rewards that a satisfied audience will bring. |
