Artist History So far, singer-songwriter Peter Murray has been best known as a bass player. He gives a solid foundation to the music of several Canadian pop greats including Ron Sexsmith and Damhnait Doyle. In his hometown of Toronto, he's one of the top call bassists; and in the international bass community, he's considered an authority on technique—in fact, he literally wrote the book. The second edition of Essential Bass Technique was published worldwide in 2002 by Hal Leonard Corporation. But Peter’s not new to songwriting. He started writing at 17 with his first band, Advance Green. Several years and bands later, he joined Surrender Dorothy, and the songs he wrote with them led to a publishing deal with BMG Canada and an international record contract with MCA/Universal, signed in Germany. After a critically-acclaimed debut CD, Serum, and six European tours, the band broke up in 1998. Peter then dove into a hectic schedule of freelance session work. As a bassist for hire, Peter’s played with dozens of talented singer-songwriters. In retrospect, he views those experiences as his songwriting school. "Ron Sexsmith is one of my favourite songwriters," he explains. "Every gig I've played with him, I've been checking him out from the best seat in the house! It's the best way to learn." Over the last couple of years, between other gigs, Peter's been honing his writing skills and building vocal confidence and acoustic guitar chops by performing at every opportunity in the Toronto area. Peter is currently working on his debut CD, co-producing with longtime studio ally Matt DeMatteo, who’s produced platinum-selling records by Big Wreck, Edwin and Ashley MacIsaac. Peter is playing most of the instruments on the disk. Peter completed his first tour as a solo artist in late April (2002), opening for Stewart Agnew in Ireland.
