Artist description
What happens when you take what would normally be a 4 or 5 piece band consisting of bass, guitar, drums, keyboards, lead vocals, and backing vocals, that plays Rock and Pop fused with Metal, Latin, Jazz, Classical, and Soul music, throw them in a blender, and divide up the final concoction among two guys for them to perform? You get They. Hailing originally from West Texas and currently inhabiting Brooklyn, NY, They are Danny Sanchez on drums and backing vocals, and Anthony Garcia on keyboards and lead vocals. They’s sound verges on piano-metal mixed with lush vocals reminiscent of Earth Wind and Fire, translating the heaviness that is so commonly executed on guitar onto the piano. Though They are sans bassist, their sound is kept full with Anthony singing and covering the low frequencies on a second keyboard set to a bass patch, while Danny fills the role of the entire percussion section a la Stuart Copeland, Will Calhoun, and Carter Beauford. If you closed your eyes you’d swear there were more than two people on stage.
The band has recently finished recording a 4 song demo, and is breaking into the New York music scene and the surrounding area. Always giving a high-energy performance, They perform regularly at places like the B3 restaurant and Lounge, Izzy Bar, and CB’s 313.
Anthony and Danny met in high school and went onto to study music at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas. During high school and college, They played together and individually in situations ranging from backing up R&B groups and fronting a strictly 80’s cover band, to playing in the rhythm section of a jazz big band and performing solo classical recitals. After graduation, They took the abundance of musical influences they had accumulated along the way and a strong desire to create truly original Rock ‘n Roll with them to New York City. Having arrived in the City just last year, the group has already been performing and recording in its current form since April 2002. They live for music and want to share it with as many people as humanly possible.

Artist History
Danny and Anthony met in High School in the thriving Metropolis of Lubbock, Texas in West Texas at the Clash of the Titans concert featuring Anthrax, Slayer, Megadeth and Alice in Chains. They learned that they were both students at the same high school and became friends thereafter. Danny was already playing drums in the school jazz band when Anthony decided to join as the guitarist. During this time they played in various rock groups with one another and with other musicians. Both joined the Texas Tech School of Music majoring in Music Education. Danny played in about a million ensembles including jazz, orchestra, steel drum groups, and a million and a half other groups. Anthony quickly switched from majoring in guitar to piano when he got a job playing cocktail hour at a local hotel. Up to this point he had only studied a minimal amount of piano. Anthony soon became enthralled by and immersed in classical music and his own compositions, and Danny was very busy as a jazz drummer on the local scene. Both continued to play and record in various local rock groups and Anthony continued to play guitar in various bar bands. After a brief interruption in their musical relationship that was highlighted by Danny's very active playing schedule, Anthony's marriage and year of study abroad in Germany, Anthony and Danny got back together to create a number of projects. One was a tongue-in-cheek, money-making project called Nice Pants, a band that played exclusively retro 80's music to inebriated Frat boys and Sorority girls, another project was backing up an R&B/Soul Group that played all of the old school stuff, and finally the recording of a full length album entitled Water. During this time Anthony was bitten by the jazz bug and began listening to records and teaching himself jazz piano, and he and Danny hosted a weekly open jazz jam at a local bar that was a lot of fun!!! Anthony then moved to the Dallas area and taught music in the public school system for a year as a piano teacher and choir director. He later went on to make a living as a musician in various groups and churches as an organist and choral director, and continued recording his own material. Danny continued living in Lubbock while finishing up his degree. Anthony moved with his wife to New York City in the Spring of 2001, and Danny moved up in the Fall. They came together and formed a group called They, and have recently finished recording a 3 song demo available on this site with digital whiz and friend Kevin Wheeler. They are living in NYC soaking up and enjoying the sounds and energy that city has to offer!!! Send an e-mail to them to get your address on the list if you are in the NYC area. Then after you do that come sheck out a gig, esse!!!! Later! |
