Artist History
The Evil Thingies were formed September 5, 2001. King Koen had just finished a gig with his band Bonedaddy, which was – let’s face it – not one of their best. Outside he started talking to John, who wanted to join Bonedaddy. John also wanted to join Koen’s other band The Ewings, or any other garage band for that matter. He hadn’t been in a band for 2 years after he left Belfast, where he had been the lead singer/guitar player of Thee Dreggs. Bonedaddy was going nowhere fast, so Koen had a better idea: why don’t we start a new band! They had already agreed on a name: The Evil Thingies. Go see the Beatles’ ‘Help’ movie if you want to find out where the name comes from. John’s girlfriend Alexandra agreed to play bass and a few days later they asked Bart, who was also in Bonedaddy, to be the drummer. Of course no garage band is complete without an organist and so Evelyne was asked to join the band. She had never been in a band before, but such things aren’t important of course. Never have, never will be. Next 2 months they just sat on their asses, talking about which songs they should do. Of course everyone thought The Evil Thingies were rehearsing all the time, but in reality they were just arguing about, for instance, which version of ‘I Happen To Love You’ was best. The Electric Prunes? The Myddle Class? Them? They never agreed but once the band started rolling they would definitely deliver the best version ever. Sad but true, to this day they never even tried. And then their good friend Gert Geluykens off ered ‘em a gig on a garage festival on January 5. That was less then 2 months away, but The Evil Thingies believed they had all the time in the world to get ready. They had naturally forgotten that Bart was about to get married and would be on honeymoon i n January. The Evil Thingies needed another drummer fast and found a replacement drummer in Peter from Los Putas. First they all went to the Wild Weekend garage festival in Spain but somehow managed to rehearse 5 times. That’s all you need, basically. Fir st gig was great, except for a few minor setbacks. Alexandra swore she would never touch a bass guitar in her life again, John was so nervous he smashed an AC30 in some idiot’s face, Koen’s fuzzbox broke down halfway through the set, Evelyne was using a d ifferent setlist than the rest of us and Peter realized he didn’t exactly like garage anyway. Except for Peter’s stupid remark none of this matters, so why do I even bother telling you this. Make no mistake about it, the Evil Thingies’ first gig was fanta stic! Exit Peter. In the meantime Bart has rejoined The Evil Thingies. What’s more, the band even rehearses once a week now. Future plans include recording stuff for their first EP and a split single with Shutdown 66, which will be released later this yea r. And have a good time of course, what else matters… ˇs |
