Artist description
Improviser/composer Chris Kelsey has led groups that have included many of the leading free jazz and experimental musicians on the New York scene, including William Parker, Joe McPhee, Phillip Johnston, Dominic Duval, Mark Whitecage, and many others. Called a "Lacy-esque master of the soprano sax" by Cadence Magazine, Kelsey has moved into the realm of computer-based music, using a laptop running interactive music software, digital signal processors, and synthesizers driven by a MIDI wind controller. Kelsey has recorded for the CIMP record label, as well as his own Saxofonis Music imprint. His work has been praised by major jazz publications and Web sites, including Jazziz, Jazz Times, Cadence, Coda, Down Beat, The All Music Guide, and the Penguin Guide to Jazz on CD. He's performed at many of New York's premiere venues for the presentation of new music, including The Knitting Factory, where he's appeared dozens of times. He's also participated in several of that club's annual summer festivals. In addition to his playing activities, Kelsey is a respected critic and editor; his writings have appeared in Jazziz, Cadence, The All Music Guide to Jazz, The MusicHound Jazz Guide, Signal to Noise, and many other publications. |
