Artist History Thornbird is a four-piece rock band based in Los Angeles. With a tip of the hat to artists like Matchbox 20, Cheap Trick and Sheryl Crow, along with just enough Beatle-esque production, Thornbird creates an engaging blend of contemporary rock that is instantly likeable and radio ready. As their self-produced three-song demo reveals, Bella, Spanky, Pat and Jake are cutting-edge musicians and songwriters with a hauntingly appealing image to match. Bella is the lead vocalist and the main creative force behind the band. Since the age of five when he first started to learn piano, his life has revolved around music. A few of his accomplishments include: voted best amateur pianist and vocalist in the nation, scholarship to The Childrens Theatre Company Performing Arts High School, national touring as lead vocalist/keyboardist/guitarist in top 40 cover bands, engineer/producer/manager for Cement Records, his own professional recording studio. His band Dogma I was voted one of the five best unsigned artists of Southern California by The Music Connection. Thanks to having musicians for parents, Spanky Arellano, bassist, also learned to play an instrument at a very early age. Besides playing electric and standup bass, Spank plays drums and numerous brass instruments. He attended the Musicians Institute (MI) and graduated with honors from BIT (Bass Institute of Technology). He does session work, teaches bass and drums and is finishing his music degree. Spank was also the bass player for the aforementioned Dogma I. Patrick Simmons started playing drums at twelve. He went to MI and graduated with honors from Percussion Institute of Technology (PIT) and has studied with veteran drum instructors like Randy Carr (Social Distortion) and Ralph Humphrey (Frank Zappa, PIT co-founder). Pat works as the drum tech and right-hand-man for the legendary Simon Phillips (The Who, Toto, Jeff Beck etc.). Also, Pat has a BA in Advertising, a teaching credential and an MS in education. While earning his BA in psychology from UCLA, Jake Knight, guitarist and also a Musicians Institute attendee, worked for numerous record companies like MCA. He managed and landed a record deal for multi-platinum band Eve 6 before deciding to leave and manage his own career. Since then he has formed, managed, written music for and played lead guitar in numerous bands, among which is Tenbone Martini which was rated one of Southern Californias best unsigned artists by Music Connection. The final component that sets this collection of talent and wills apart is their collaborative efforts as songwriters with Jan Buckingham, a multi Grammy-nominated writer for artist like Whitney Houston and Pam Tillis. Together, armed with the talent, knowledge, and discipline that are essential in the marketing of any great band, Thornbird has created music that has won the hearts of critics and artists alike.
