Artist description
Matt Surowiec is a singer/songwriter born and raised in Buffalo, NY by a Polish-Irish-German family, wealthy in humor, recipes, and tradition. On his second independent release, aptly titled "Made in Buffalo", Matt draws upon his working class roots to paint mind-stimulating stories of comic and tragic characters.
His dirt in the fingernails, "hard folk" sound is second cousin to Soul Asylum covering Willie Nelson, Billy Joel, and Tom Petty. |

Artist History
Matt began singing at age 5 and has played guitar since he was 13. He continually explores new musical territory, from country to ethnic folk music to loud electric guitar rock. On this current stop along his musical journey, Matt has played in many Western New York bars and coffeehouses over the past 3 years. His goal is to elevate Buffalo's reputation and enhance Buffalo's image by romanticizing its past, present, and people, as Bruce Springsteen did for New Jersey and John Mellencamp did for the American Heartland. Matt’s efforts are not limited to mere observation – two years ago he spearheaded an ongoing campaign to preserve Buffalo Memorial Auditorium until the building can be redeveloped.
A restless, self-taught, musically curious multi-instrumentalist (guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, harmonica, accordion, recorder, zither, pots and pans...), Matt has played with the hard rock band "Bound & Gagged", the U2 tribute "Mysterious Ways" (bass), and oldies bands "After Dark" and "Eastwood". His marathon rendition of "Dixie" at age 4 on a toy piano at Two Guys earned a standing ovation after his mother dragged him out of the store. His first "official" on-stage performance occurred in kindergarten, and he has appeared in at least one show a year since then. |
