    Artist description
************************* BS BEHIND THE SCENES **************************************** Style. It has so many meanings. Your hair. Your clothes. Your posture. But one man, trancends that word. "Why try sounding like everyone else? Why do something because everyone else is doin' it? How can you go to bed knowing that you're living your life off someone else's?" That is BS. "I mean, yeah, try to fit in, yeah, don't start protests over people with green shoelaces, and dumb s*** like that, but never forget what makes you you!" In a perfect world the world would be flooded with BS already. "When I was younger, I tried to act black, I tried to thug it out, and everything else that comes with it to get in hip-hop's door. And sure, it got me in the door, got me into this game, but man, it got me zero respect. None. Everyone knew it just wasn't me" This industry corrupts minds, and his was no different. "I'll admit, I was livin' a rock-star life without the rock-star. Everything was handed to me, everything was easy, and I didn't see an end. My flow was tight, I figured I was a shoe-in to get a deal." Young and egotistical ended up being the kiss of death. "When you think you're untouchable, you're not prepared for a letdown, you don't know how to handle failure." The failure that he talks of was mostly self-imposed. "Milked it for all it was worth. Let's leave it at that. I pissed on a ton of people, kept pushing buttons, and one day... it's gone." Being unprepared, he stumbled even furthur, and lost sight of his goals. "Music? Flowin'? Damn, I was concerned about anything but. I figured one or two people turnin' me away, no longer aiding my cause, would mean 8 or 9 wanting to, so I continued to live the lie." But he soon learned he was not in 'game shape' as he calls it. His head was nowhere near it should have been, and his body and talent followed suit. Then there was a few incidents, and you have promise turned to waste. "It was hard to admit I was wrong all along, but it was needed, I knew I needed to find myself. So I turned my foucs on cleaning myself up, getting back into shape, mentally and physically, and a couple years go by, and once I get ok again, I looked back, and just shook my head in shame. I was a character." So he made a few calls, met with a few people from his past, and found out how badly the bridges were burned. He also realized his passion wasn't as strong as before. "I really found out who my friends were, and wrote how I felt. But I didn't want to do what I did before. I wasn't feeling it." Then, months later, it was there. And for the first time, it was natural. "I was out, just screwin' around at a party, and started to flow, and it turned into a mini-show, sort of speak. So I went home, busted out my notepad, and started to talk about my life, honestly, and it felt good again. It felt real good, everything clicked, it was natural, 'cause I was." So to prove those who doubted him wrong, and to prove it to himself, he took the reigns on his project. "My production. My lyrics. My(guest)MC's. Ever since day one, it wasn't about being rich, it wasn't about the fame, it was about fun." So upon completion of his LP, 'Full of Smith.. It's BS' these are his thoughts: "I grew. I learned alot in a few years. I wanted to say something with substance. May not mean anything to the casual listener, but to myself, and those around me. The ones I affected, the ones I let down. I've found more talents by using this one. I found heart, determination, a will to succeed. I never knew it was there. I mean, I'm not all about some mystic quest, or anything like that, but I have more than music, but the music I do have, is mine. It's true. It's different. And I did it 'cause I wanted to. I don't run around sayin' or even acting like a star, why should I? Give me a simple pleasure, give me something that means something, maybe I'll go back into the studio, maybe not. But I've now made some music for it's real purpose, not for the parties, cash, the girls, drugs, whatever.. Nah, for the expression, for the feeling. I lost it 'cause of it, and I got it back ten-fold. When you listen to the new CD, from track 1 to 13, it's like a story, a movie. The intro is the summary, the plot, and the last track is the climax, the finish. I'm not making tracks so they can be played in club, or some 10 year old can run around hummin' it. I hate the fact that they have commercials tellin' parents to talk to their kids. Hello? Kids really have no one to turn to anymore I think. So the influence performers have is insane. So if I ever did get famous, then a kid hummin' it would be 'cause they understood the lyrics, they didn't listen for the catchy-ness, they got the message. And if my impact is made somewhere else, so be it, I'll still make an impact on kids lives. My own. And maybe my creativeness will be passed down to them, and they'll take it a level higher than me. And they'll change the world for the better. Everything happens for a reason, so check it out, 'cause it's good thing to have a lil' BS in your life every now and then." --- Interview from www.boomchicago.nl (06/2002)
