Artist description
Paul Bass' music draws on his wide and varied musical experiences and influences.
Classically trained, Paul's love of progressive rock and jazz took him into many musical realms. He played Hammond B-3 organ and electric piano throughout the 1960s with a variety of groups, including being a founding member of the '70s prog-rock ensemble Ivory, which recorded one eponymous album on Playboy Records (PB115).
Paul was very much in demand as an accompanist for pop and jazz vocalists throughout the 70s, 80s, and 90s, touring extensively throughout the U.S and Canada. In the 1990's Paul increasingly turned away from the Hammond organ in favor of the acoustic piano, and recorded a number of solo albums and collaborations with bassist Steve Pinkston in the 1990s.
In his solo piano work, one can certainly hear echoes of Paul's heroes: Bill Evans, Keith Jarrett, Count Basie. But one hears even more strongly the unique individual voice of Paul Bass. His compositions are heartfelt and original, and his covers of beloved tunes always bring new surprises and delights.
