    Artist History
TINFED's story: From their lean and hungry youth to their present-day position as pop terrorists, TINFED look to connect as well as infect. From the fans to the bands who've taken them on tour, it looks like they've succeeded. When TINFED formed in the wake of DIY that spread throughout their hometown of Sacramento in the early 90s, they were just four kids fueled by their love of music. Lines of punk and rave had blurred and all things driven by the DIY movement collided on the same stage. "We would do shows followed by raves, and there were times we would be playing on a stage and raves were going on at the other side of a walkway, " recalls Rey Osburn (voice, programming, guitar) "There would be firedancers, glowsticks, amps and drums at every corner of the warehouse." Such spectacle altered TINFED's mindset- not to mention the impact it made on the larger youth culture. The city's night culture steadily became the boundless meeting grounds for new prolific friends. The alternative lifestyle made Matt Mccord (drums) realize he was meant to play music. "It was more about a reason to be young and not so much about being cool," the rhythm keeper decides. "People would just come together under a freeway, plug in a sound system and throw a show or a rave. You would go see your friends' bands plug into a wall on top of a parking garage or on the roof of Safeway. We didn't know what we were doing; we just had the determination to collectively use our talents to forward the community we were so into."Rick Verrett (bass, synth) says this of their musical upbringing: "We were surrounded by people striving to do something in music, whether it was to be in a band, put on live shows or run record labels. I didn't know anybody or anything else that would make me want to do something different." In this musical climate, having a collaborative relationship with like-minded friends pushed the band to establish their unique position in the burgeoning city. The Sacramento scene fostered diversity - and a bit of friendly competition. "Rivalry," Rick corrects. "We all nurtured each others' creativity," explains Eric Stenman (guitar, progamming). "In high school, I got to see everything up close and personal thanks to the punk scene. As soon as I realized that I could do it too, music became my favorite creative medium. We were exposed to so much great music during that time."The four came together to harness a new kind of sound mixing punk, techno, pop and, well, noise. When the band began embellishing their live shows with unconventional tools such as tape recorders, TVs and lo-fi equipment, the use of a sampler became inescapable. "We were so inspired by the unpredictable sounds of banging and schreeching that we couldn't just write on guitar and drums anymore, " says Rey of the logical progression. "It was the most natural thing to do ," he pauses, then adds, "However unnatural that might seem." The end result is a perfect blend of sonics and harmonics. When asked how this formula set the band apart from others, Rey readily replies, "We reflect our inspirations not copy them. Our goal is to get the formula right and make it our own thing."Doing their own thing is an understatement. Now working harder than ever to diminsh gaps between punk, club and rock chic, TINFED play up the old-school DIY ideal and sharpen their skills by producing, writing and DJing breaking new music. This ethic has landed them opening spots on tours with Depeche Mode, Sneaker Pimps, Deftones and also a track on the Mission: Impossible 2 Soundtrack as well as Diesel's Fall 2002 CD sampler. TINFED have always promised to push themselves and cross barriers. With a new release in final production the wait is over. The future is now . . . -Britt Schoenhoff

    Press Reviews
CMJ: Tinfed makes music that sounds grittily urban, a soundtrack to a really rocking post-apocalyptic club. Alternative Press: If Tinfed had an evolutionary chart, Steve Albini would be dragging his knuckles at the far left... Axcess: Tinfed have mastered the art of blending excellent programming with heavy-yet-melodic guitar riffs sounds as if it could be the background music to a Ridley Scott Film Heckler Magazine: It's rare to come across a band with something resembling a new sound these days. Tinfed shows that it can still be done. Neo techno/trip hop sequencing, inventive beats, intense guitars, and catchy vocals come togetherÉMost importantly, Tinfed never forgets that writing interesting songs comes first. Paper Magazine: You're cruising along, absentmindedly fumbling with the radio dial in your car, looking for something even remotely listenable since your ancient tape player finally crapped out. You come across Tinfed's super-catchy debut single "Way Thru" on your local alternative station, and you leave the dial where it is, because the tune is familiar; the rhythms are reminiscent of other radio rock songs lodged in your subconscious. But something in singer Rey Osburn's yearning voice compels you to listen beyond the band's slick, commercial production and pick up the rewarding subtleties buried underneath the big, requisite guitar riffs that are all over Tried True. Osburn's nasal vocals land him somewhere between Oasis' Liam Gallagher and Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor -- but instead of being full of brash attitude, they're tinged with vulnerability and an emotive earnestness. While Osburn's backed by powerful hooks and the occasionally heavy, funkified bassline, soft breakbeats and dreamy samples drift through the songs, tempering the band's harder industrial tones. But ultimately, it's impossible to ignore the driving force of pulsing numbers like "Arrange" and "Always/Never"... and frankly, why try? Enjoy Tinfed straight up. -Britt Schoenhoff CMJ Monthly: Tinfed has always gotten mad props from its Sacramento brethren the Deftones. It's definitely a plus to receive a ringing endorsement from such a wildly popular band, but Tinfed has been around, honing its rock style for nearly ten years now. In the past, critics have erroneously assumed that Tinfed is an aggro-industrial outfit because of its previous affiliation with Reconstriction, a label known for its electronic output. While such influences have always been heard in Tinfed's sound, Tried True contains pretty guitar pop enhanced only minimally by studio machinery. A few electronic conventions, such as beats and drum 'n' bass passages, strategically rear their head occasionally, but Tried True is really a forward-thinking rock record with plenty of potential commercial appeal. Amy Sciarretto Alive and Kicking: BAM! Ladies and Gentleman, that explosion and subsequent blur of objects flying by was TINFED zipping before you ever had a chance to catch them on the local club circuit. Hmmmm. Ok. That's actually not true at all, but as the TINFED hype builds right now, (brought about to some decree with their inclusion on the M:I 2 soundtrack) I find more and more people saying to me, "Wow, that's something about that TINFED band... I've never heard of them." The thing is TINFED has been playing Sacramento for years. Good shows too. Deftones, Far, Fugazi and on and on. They've always had a legion of fans but never the buzz they deserved. 'Til now. And wait until their Hollywood Records' debut hits the street and airwaves. TINFED's new CD is incredible. Nine Inch Nails meets Far. The Cure with urgency. Pop songs that snarl. Dark brooding numbers to tap your feet to. This is some of the most accessible angst since Nirvana. And the production? I hear it was produced by one of the Psychedelic Furs. TINFED already has a couple studio savvy members, but add to that the alleged "fur-guy"... and well, the proof is in the putting on your headphones. Yowza! "Idol." That's the song. Ney, that's one among many, but the one I'm the biggest sucker for. Who knows what will come of anyone getting signed these days? At the very least, know this: This is a great album, and if TINFED doesn't hit the ground running, just chalk it up to one more label fucking up the natural resources they're supposed to be nurturing. Idiots. Let's hope TINFED beats the odds. Surely this is a virtual no-brainer for the bonehead industry back patters. Sadly, even no-brainers challenge their dubious abilities.-Jerry Perry
