    Artist description
Monkeys with Guns is a pop rock trio made up of Patrick Haberl on lead vocals and guitar, Andre Beaulieu on bass and backing vocals and Gord Rogers on drums. The band has been playing its original material for more than 3 years and is now playing clubs such as the PIC, the Silvertone, the Purple Onion and the Commodore in and around the Vancouver area. Information on gigs can be found on the band's website, www.monkeyswithguns.com. Monkeys with Guns' first cd, “Evolver”, released in May 2002, is a collection of 14 songs headlined “Evolution 101” which explains the name of the band. “We often get asked about the name” explains Haberl, “and we like to point out that, despite the flavour of the name, we are decidedly anti violence. The song explains that, after thousands of years of evolution, we still fight like primates. It goes on to ask whether we can change that behaviour of our own volition, or are we still just monkeys with guns. It’s kind of a challenge to all of us to make the choice to be civilized”. The music is somewhere between Matchbox 20 and Collective Soul. “Tom Harrison (music critic for the Vancouver Province newspaper) reviewed our first demo (released in 1999) in the Province and likened our sound to the Counting Crows” relates Haberl “but I tend to think of us as a bit more rock oriented than that. I think we’re influenced most by late 70s rock and guys like Lenny Kravitz and Ben Harper.” The members of the band are long time friends, and they play for the love of playing. “We used to play in party bands together before MWG” explains Haberl “particularly in University where we played every frat house known to man”. Then Haberl started to write. “At first it was slow going, but now we’re up to something like 130 songs. We need to get in the studio and crank out a few albums! Recording “Evolver” has gotten us primed to play live and connect with our audience. We’re really enjoying the live experience right now.”
