Artist History Sherry Chang Huei-Mei, better known as A*Mei (or A-Mei) to her fans, is one of China and Taiwan's biggest singing sensations. In fact, her impact is so large, a recent ban of her records and songs in China garnered worldwide headlines. After the sultry pop sensation sang the Taiwanese anthem at the inauguration of President Chen Shui-bian (you have to understand the history and politics behind the Taiwan/China conflict), enraged Chinese officials decreed that she was banned from China. Radio stations seized broadcasting her singles, and Coca-Cola stopped endorsing her after her Sprite commercials could not be aired. Luckily for A-Mei, her popularity was too large to ignore, and her ban was lifted. After 5 albums, and a style that combines attitude with unprecedented sex appeal, A-Mei has reached almost cult status in Asia. Though she names Whitney Houston as one of her influences, you'd be hard pressed to find anything like Whitney on her albums. What you can expect is for the talented A*Mei to go out and not only dance her brains out, but occasionally pick up a guitar to play a song. Now that is something we don't see Britney Spears doing at all.
