Artist History
"I've got a secret I can't tell" from Sworn II Silence's debut single "Designation" sums up the feelings of a band who makes its home in an area where the music scene is the best kept secret of all; Cleveland, Ohio. Featuring longtime friends and collaborators and a veritable "who's who" of the Cleveland modern rock and metal scene, Sworn II Silence is preparing to break their silence in 2003 with a full length album.
In 2001, Sworn II Silence entered Spider Studio in Strongsville Ohio, with co-producer Tony Gammalo and began recording the bulk of what would become their debut album. The band received help in studio from longtime friends Chad Szeliga and Ben Schigel (percussionist and lead vocalist for the Virgin/Immortal records band "Switched") and other prominent local musicians, all providing some sort of creative or moral support. The current lineup includes Guy Christopher on lead vocals and keyboards; Chad Dennis on guitars, lead and backing vocals and keyboards; Duane Rutter on guitars, vocals and keyboards; and Scott Dall on percussion. Also appearing on the album are Art Poling, Chris McCoy, Adam Halitzka, and Shawn May (formerly of "Switched") on bass guitar and backing vocal. The album was completed at the band's own studio "Velocity Studio" in late 2002.
Released this year, the debut album "Sworn II Silence" is a hard rock masterwork, being lauded by some as the best local debut of 2003. The album, produced by Sworn II Silence and Tony Gammalo, takes several stylistic twists and turns, featuring low key passages for just keyboard and guitar, lounge band undertones, industrial/noise rock influences, and roots in hardcore, punk and rock. Lead vocalist, Guy Christopher refers to their sound as "Unafraid heavy rock; it makes you think, it makes you cry, and it will kick you in the teeth if you turn your back on it."
2003 is shaping up to be a lucrative year for Sworn II Silence, as the band returns its multi-faceted multimedia show to the road to let the world see what 9 years of cooperative songwriting and performing can establish. This band epitomizes elegant aggression, coupled with eloquent performance. Emotional, technical, contemplative, but never ignored; Sworn II Silence is poised to bury its proverbial boot in the modern music world. |

The cover art for "Sworn II Silence," which depicts a man in front of a twister can give the listener the initial impression that the album is either strangely comical or dead serious. It is no secret that after listening to the track "Disturbance," the former is definitely the primary focus. It is also hard to tell what the standout feature of the album is. It could be Guy's versatile Mike Patton-influenced singing or the extremely tight songwriting in general. And while the majority of the album is hard rock full of catchy choruses and intelligent lyrics, the band reaches out and experiments with non-traditional rock elements such as church bells on the beginning of "The Agony of Defeat" and finger snaps, scratching and thunderstorm samples on "Smoke Filled Lounge." "Sworn II Silence" blows all of the current Faith No More wanna-bes out of the water and is one of the best debuts of 2002.

The music industry has seen its ups and downs as of late, the current pop-punk scene is making rise, old hardcore bands are finding new listeners, and the Nu-Metal crap that was getting heavy radio rotation is beginning to get the backlash it deserves. From the ashes of Nu-Metal comes "Sworn II Silence" which runs the gambit from the old early 90's seattle movement into 80's "metallic" groove with the onslaught of Faith No More's "The Real Thing". There's humorous parts shaken nicely into a mix of straight and alternative metal, and amazing multi part vocal harmony entwining with a well versed lead singer who can apparently scream his head off too. In all, it hasn't left my cd player since I picked it up. TOP NOTCH!
