Artist History
What started as a hobby to kill some time has now grown into an full blown passion. You see, four co-workers decided to get together on the weekends to make some noise and have some beer. That was back in 2002. Well, one thing led to another, word got out, Black44 started to get a fan base, and the rest is history.
Due to their collective work schedules, Black44 doesn't get to play out very often. When they do though, it's not just a gig, it's an event. You see, all the guys in Black44 work as stagehands, each with their own specialty, so they know how to do shows the correct way. This is especially true for the periodic parties held at Black44's rehearsal room.
Jeremy "Edge" Mullan on vocals does lighting and rigging. He ran lights at the famous Bash On Ash in Tempe for a while, and has worked as a local stagehand for several touring acts in his day. With Black44, it's Jeremy's first attempt at getting on stage and letting someone else run the show.
Mike "Toaster" Toth on guitar does audio, and has worked at almost every club in town at one time or another. He's even been requested by name for certain bands. With Black44, it's Mike's first run with a band that might actually go places.
Mike "Parcanz" Perkins on bass dabbles in lighting, audio, and rigging. With his 6' 10" frame, he's very adept at rigging. Mike started out on guitar with a few local bands, but found the bass better suited to his large hands. He's also done music promotion in the past, and helped to manage the infamous Church Of The Black Goat back before the owner let the place fall apart.
Roger "Roach" Armstrong on drums is the oldest member of Black44, and has the most past band experience under his belt. He works as a video projectionist and does some local stagehand work on the side.
There was no specific direction to the music of Black44; no specific philosophy or goal. The idea was to simply play, and see what came out in the mix. And since everyone in Black44 grew up with old punk and metal, that's what eventually spewed forth.
Still, you can't please everybody. The young punk kids think that Black44 is too metal, and all the metalheads say they're too punk. However, quite a few people come around who fondly remember old Black Sabbath and slam dance to Black Flag. They're the ones who get it; they're the new converts, the disciples of Black44. |
