Press Reviews
Battle of the bands pleases energetic crowd
By Kevin Grindlay
Staff Writer
A "SLAYER!" chant was almost started on campus last Friday at the Memorial Mall, during the fifth annual Battle of the Bands.
Though its set seemed a bit short, the Pawnstars definitely made an impression on the crowd during its performance. The band members jumped, thrashed and shouted and eventually made a tribute to metal band Slayer.
At one point, the Pawnstars bassist stripped off his outer garment and unveiled an ostentatious Slayer shirt, complete with a giant reptilian demon head. He then attempted to start a chant of "SLAYER!" among the audience, but as soon as the chant began to gain momentum, it just as quickly faded out.
But the Pawnstars weren’t done shocking the audience yet. After shooting multiple flares into the air, they went into a cover of Neil Young’s "Rockin’ In the Free World."
This selection was the exact song that Free Raine had just performed, which surprised the audience. However, they added deep, growling vocals and punkish guitar work to give it a new twist.
It's set closed with the members molesting each other and the audience didn't appear shocked. |
