It is and isn't Radiohead or Portishead, Massive Attack or Sade, Sarah Vaughan meets Tricky in a Verve remix gone awry...It is all of these, a kaleidoscope spun through fragments of R&B and late romanticism, viewed through the lens of a beat-chopped nation. Unashamedly cinematic and unpredictably angular, Maimou bleeds tender melodies buckling under the weight of 808 kicks. Maimou takes you through a dazzling exploration of influences and insights, and brings you back with transcendent mixes and vicious hooks. Maimou is scorching songstress Juliana Sheffield and boy-wonder synth wizard Zachary Baird, two Texas musicians who found themselves in the glamour and desperation of Los Angeles, experiencing poverty among plenty, and bringing all that they had to songs which are both achingly personal and universal. After six months of intense songwriting, Maimou emerged to earn a residency at Santa Monica's Temple Bar. Almost immediately, Maimou attracted a loyal following and rapidly-growing fan base, one which quickly propelled them to dates in major venues across Southern California, a dizzying rise which was anything but overnight. On the strength of their wildly successful live shows, Maimou recorded a rough demo which even in its unmixed form promptly won them showcases with Epic, Interscope, Island/Def Jam, and Columbia Records.
