Artist description
Starting at the age of 14, Ray took his bands Disabuse, Scarlet Reign, and
12 O'clock Somewhere on the Southern California club circuit, eventually
opening up for bands such as Social Distortion and No Doubt.
Using the experience he acquired during those years as a basis, Ray developed
his writing skills, studied voice, and starting doing his own production.
The result of all this hands-on experience is a his new CD "Social
Lubricant." Ray's freshman effort is a full-bodied collection of ringing guitars and
heavy hooks that don't try to disguise the Alternative Rock melancholy at its core.
Using his personal experiences as a starting point, Ray explores many of the
emotional situations people find themselves in to create the thought-provoking lyrics that are the songs of "Social Lubricant".
The album has enjoyed early and hard fought airplay on commercial stations
WIIS, WQXA, KEYJ, KNEN, KLBQ, WXEF and WLVY. A growing fan base in
Los Angeles has encouraged a band to join Ray as he plans a tour in support of
the record.

Producer Todd Tackett compares Ray Doktor to Lenny Kravitz on "Social Lubricant." After listening to this eclectic group of songs, I have to agree with Tackett. While many folks may scoff at such a comparison, I feel that this artist has enough talent to live up to those high standards. Granted, he does not have the fame and fortune of Kravitz, but he certainly has equal amounts of talent and energy to reach that lofty level if given the opportunity to do so.
His insightful lyrics and an effective combination of hard rocking sounds coupled with the ability to bring a song to a slower pace at a moments notice is an art that surely took many hours of deliberation and thought to record. The one song that really touched me was "Father." The timing was perfect, as I had just said goodbye to my Dad after visiting with him for the last week. I had not seen him in over six years. It is always hard to say goodbye with the uncertainty of knowing when we are ever going to see someone again, which is the reality we face every day as we walk out the door. Then after hearing "All I really Need" a few times I found myself saying "Man, this guy is really good" more than once during the run of this CD. He is better than good; exceptional is a much better word to describe him.
What I found most appealing besides the overall sound of this production was the way Doktor utilized all of the talent, besides his own, that was available to him in the studio. Because of his tremendously good timing and judgment, each track enjoys many good moments. It is not easy to record 12 tracks of music and have them turn out so solid. I recognize how much work goes into that. Being able to relate personal experience to the music you listen to is very important as well. I had no problem doing that with Doktor's music.
Do you want to listen to a shaker and a mover? Pick up a copy of this CD and turn it up full blast.
