Artist History
A Michigan native, guitarist Mark Sullivan has been active as a composer and performer since 1977. Since moving to Charlotte, he has been a member of the eclectic jazz group Cornerstone. Creative Loafing's Kevin Morgan described him as an "adventurous jazz guitarist whose nicely textured work is somewhat in the mold of the innovative Bill Frisell," while the Charlotte Observer's Ken Johnson called him "an impressively dexterous string-bender, not afraid of incorporating a slightly 'rock' approach." |

Press Reviews
"Once upon a time there was a fantastic jazz /noise/ anything-goes improv outfit called Cornerstone. They were one of the most interesting live units in the city. Mark Sullivan did a stint with them during their last year of existence and now this Robert Fripp and Kenny Burrell influenced guitarist does the occasional jazz thing. Mark's an adept jazz and avant garde guitarist who lays the chords and notes down, which are answered by his solid rhythm back-up band. This is a rare chance to see one of the more interesting and unsung musicians in the city." Creative Loafing
"Former guitarist for jazz freakniks Cornerstone, Mark Sullivan steps out with his own trio. An impressively dexterous string-bender who's been compared to Bill Frisell and John Scofield, Sullivan works in a fusion/avant-garde framework. He's not afraid of incorporating a slightly ``rock'' approach (use of distortion and delay) or blazing solos." Charlotte Observer
"Former Cornerstone conspirator is out on his own now and his new stuff looks to be a bit less loopy and subversive than that singular ensemble. But, it also looks to be no less adventurous. A guitarist, Sullivan works the modern standards -- Davis, Coltrane and Monk -- but also indulges the "pattern music" of Reich and Glass." Creative Loafing |
