Artist History
At just 28 years old, Dusseldorf singer/songwriter Morgan OBrien has about as much life experience as someone twice his age. Born outside of Minneapolis, Minnesota, (home to such musical legends as Prince, Jimmy Jam, and Terry Lewis), OBrien set his sights high from a very young age.
"Ever since I was a kid I can remember wanting to be a part of music making. I played saxaphone in my highschool band, sang in choir, and I guess it was around junior high that I discovered I loved to be onstage." He began performing in local productions at the age of 12, and upon graduating highschool went on to study Musical Theater at Stevens Point University.
"At Stevens Point is where I took my first songwriting class and started to get serious about writing. It took me a long time to find my voice, (literally and figuratively), and I think I never really finished a complete song until after leaving school."
In 1994, Morgan began his career as a professional actor. He has been seen in Chicago, Cleveland, Louisville, Orlando, and of course NYC, and also been a part of a US National Tour, an International Tour, and several musicals in Germany, and has been on the payrolls of such entertainment giants as Disney, Warner Brothers, and Cameron Mackintosh.
"I've certainly done a lot in the last few years. In February I had to go to the American Embassy to get new pages added to my passport because it was completely full! Lots of travelling. Always someplace new. It's been very exciting and sometimes very trying."
The songs here at MP3.com are all produced and recorded by OBrien himself.
"To tell you the truth, I don't really know what I'm doing!", he says with a giggle, "I pieced together a studio from gear that I got from friends and stuff I bought myself, and sort of just dove in and started experimenting. I know it doesn't all sound fabulous, and I know my strong points and weak points. It's just a matter of learning as I'm going. I wouldn't mind working with some of the great producers and studios, like Flyte Time or Rodney Jerkins, but that takes an investment. Not just of money, but also of artistry. When you work with an outside producer on anything, it's inevitable that some of your original vision and ideas will disappear in the collaboration. I want to get a solid ground beneath my feet before I make that next step..." |
