Press Reviews
Review of TWL's earlier incarnation, Hundredfold:
The Capital Times
Wisconsin State Journal
Rhythm
June 3-9, 1999
"Madison progressive rock band Hundredfold has unfolded.
And what it reveals after a year in the making is cinematic and orchestral richness ripe for the listening. Not just any listener -
but the mature listener interested in the complexities of musical
texture. In fact it's fans of bands such as Rush and King Crimson who
likely will most appreciate Hundredfold's thought-provoking
lyrics about the tragedy of war and sudden death topped by
wide angle soundscapes.
The band's demo CD features three songs ranging from four
minutes and 23 seconds to almost seven minutes.
"Homeland" sounds like something Elton John would love to
get his hands on, melodic and moving seemlessly through the
story frames like a well edited movie.
"Brave New World" has a "space-rock" feel, sort of like Led
Zeppelin holding hands with Rush and running into Hawkwind.
"Red & Black" opens with keyboards pattering like a gentle rain
and then building into a driving New Age-ish rhythm.
Singer Matthew Kallonas' melodic vocals, reminiscent of
Rush's Geddy Lee, quickly step in. Kallonas' strong voice was
honed as a classically trained baritone soloist with degrees in
music and theology from the University of Liverpool, England.
Hundredfold's demo CD lyrics were written by the band's
founder, keyboardist Jim Ford (a classical pianist trained at the
California Institute of the Arts). The music mimics the
melancholy words, carefully paired, the way Sting does his
writing.
Rounding out the group is bassist Jeff Maas, who is a
cartographer and who co-authored a historical atlas of
Wisconsin in 1998.
Hundredfold's drummer is Dunes, a longtime Madison musician
who has performed with bands such as Cognitive Dissonance,
Fluid Drive and the Nazarenes. He also bears an amazing
resemblance to Foo Fighters' lead singer David Grohl and
played the Grohl character in the Broom Street Theatre
production of "Unplugged: The Kurt Cobain Story." With
Hundredfold he plays his custom-built drums.
Hundredfold performs at the Pres House, 731 State St., 8 p.m.
Saturday.
There will be no opening act or cover charge - but stick around
for refreshments.
Also watch for them on Tim Sundog's show on WYOU cable
channel 4 at 8 p.m. June 19.
