Press Reviews
The Daily Helmsman Thursday, October 26, 2000 Arts & Entertainment By Johanna EdwardsA lot of indie cd's turn up on my desk, but few stand out as much as Memphian Brad Pounders', She Shakes.Fused with a variety of sounds, (a baby's heartbeat, for example, leads one track) Pounders' music is fresh and original, with a slightly retro-'80s flair. If you're a fan of new wave, you'll find She Shakes a phenomenal album. It's the best of its breed, and well worth a listen even if you're not partial to this brand of sound. It's filled with unique and fresh components and powerfully memorable (the leading song, "Four Chambers" stayed in my head for days after I listened to it).Just a few years ago Pounders seemed on the fast track to indie success. The Clears released a well received album on the label Smells Like Records (which was started by Sonic Youth's drummer, Steve Shelley).Unfortunately, right as things were picking up steam, the Clears disbanded. Their untimely break-up left Pounders feeling a bit jilted, but also spawned his solo career."The way the Clears broke up was really disappointing for me," said Pounders, a senior psychology major at the university. "I thought that we were really going in a certain direction that was positive, that we had a really good opportunity and that we had a good record under our belt. We had a lot of talent within the three of us. Once that kind of broke apart, I was definitely disappointed and it took a while (to get back) the resolve."It took him two years to compile She Shakes (four of the songs were originally intended to go on the Clears' second release)."Much of the recording of this record was a definite and direct response to (the Clears' break up). I wanted to prove myself as an artist in my own right," he said. He's definitely accomplished his goal, proving himself as a talented artist repeatedly on his new disc.Though, he stressed, it took a lot of hard work and perseverance to get the album made."Money is always a problem," Pounders said. "Unless you're with an upper-echelon indie label, they don't have the funds to pay for the artist, to pay for the recording time, to pay for the production. A lot of it came out of loans and out of my own pocket."Pounders hopes to see some of his funds coming back as the album sells, but remained pragmatic, and said he isn't banking on massive fame and fortune."I've been making records for a while and I have yet to see a dime. For a while that bothered me, but now it doesn't. I think there's three people in the world who have money in the music business------the rest of us just kind of watch from the sidelines," hes said, laughing. "Bubbling Synth Pop that's a dazzling, glittering array of silver blips, droning whirs, and electrified dance beats. So catchy and deliciously New Wave-poppy, it's nearly good enough to eat."-Lycos.com She Shakes Brad Pounders (Bulb/Larson) More proof that new new-wave (see also: Pulsars, Imperial Teen, Garbage) is often preferable to old new-wave, this solo record from ex-Clears member Brad Pounders is a solid batch of melodic synth-pop. Personally, I like the record most the more up-tempo it is and the less affected the vocals. "Four Chambers" sounds like it was left off OMD's greatest hits, and yes, that is a compliment. Four tracks from She Shakes were recorded for a second Clears album that was never released, the best of which is "The Assembly" which has background vocals from Pounders' old bandmate.
