Artist description
DANCERS immersed in the spinning colored lights and strobes of the underground other-world, glorying in their bodies, teasing prospective mates, rippling to the beat ---- BIG HEAD makes the beats, mixing cutting-edge techno and tried-and-true Old School in a way that tends to pack dance floors. It's a sound like a long-lost New Order hit remixed for today, a blend of samples and live drums, the breadth of sexual ecstasy and raw heartbreak, hypnotic beats and treble-hooked melody lines, rhythm & rhyme. A five song disk titled "Floppy" captures BIG HEAD's irrepressable dance groove, but it is only a small part of the story...One could mistake Big Head for one of those one-person dance bands who only exist in someone's basement. That couldn't be further from the truth. For although "Floppy" is an accomplished dance record produced by today's sequencers, samplers, keyboards and other digital equipment, Big Head is primarily a monstrous live band. Singer Kevin Garvey rivets the crowd with his emotive vocals and athletic stage presence. Guitarist Keith Bohne' guards the left half of the stage, swiping at the cargo netting that encases the band with his Fender Strat. Drummer Gordon Shirley keeps the pulse alive behind his electronic drums, while keyboardist/programmer Jeff Epperson guides the band from beside Shirley, like the man behind the curtain. Big Head is alive. Big Head's repertoire, which ranges from Floppy's uptempo dance songs to heavier industrial sounds a la Nine Inch Nails, is immensely popular in the region surrounding their hometown, Louisville, KY., where they are the top draw at several major clubs. The diversity of their following is staggering, and the promise of this band is astounding. Listen to "Stick Around" and its instantly addictive chorus. Get lost in the uplift and idealism of "Higher," the panicky despair in "Losing You," the rush of "Mistake"...and you realize that this is only the beginning. An album is a mere snapshot of a band caught at one moment. That's certainly the case with a band as resourceful and resilient as Big Head. Good as it may sound, Floppy is an EP that just tells one part of the story of the dance quartet, Big Head. |
