Like their peers BR5-49 and Southern Culture on the Skids, Chapel Hill's Betsy in the Gene Pool juggle humor melodrama and good music all for the sake of entertainment. Their audience's or their own? We're never really sure. With her cupie doll inflections, singer, Betsy Shatto sets the stage for a wild hay ride. At their best, they're a barn dance hoe-down band pickin' rock n' roll bluegrass. At their least interesting, Shatto bellows like Heart's Ann Wilson on the country power ballad |
