Artist History
History
In 1998, simple mary's diary released their first e.p...,"Magnetic, Baby!", five songs recorded in Nashville, TN over three days. Three days apparently well spent.
The e.p. has been reviewed in the Riverfront Times (which listed smd as a nominee for both Best New Band and Best Hard Rock Band in the 1998 Music Issue), the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, and Night Times magazine.
While the title track has been receiving local air play on 93.3 KNSX and 104.1 KXTM (Extreme Radio), the song has also received some national air play thanks the Ricochet Internet Magazine compilation, V.Beta, alongside MOBY.
"Magnetic, Baby!" was also featured on 105.7 The Point's compilation, Pointessential Vol. 6. Thanks to the inclusion on the compilation, "Magnetic, Baby!" was a competitor on The Point's "Cage Match" winning against Santana (featuring Everlast) and narrowly defeated by Blink 182.
With their new found popularity, simple mary's diary found themselves frequent on-air performing guests for KDHX, KXTM, and KPNT; as well as numerous station sponsored events.
After many gigs headlining or opening shows for major label artists bands as diverse as Joydrop, Drivin' n' Cryin', and Burlap to Cashmere at venues around St. Louis, smd began regularly headlining the the most popular nightclub in town, Mississippi Nights; while also branching out to Kansas City, Springfield, and Cape Girardeau, MO and going further into Nashville, TN, Springfield, IL, and Little Rock, AR, Columbus, Oh.
simple mary's diary released their latest maxi-single, "whatever makes you happy", featuring selections from their forthcoming full-length record, "the pleasure dress by simple mary's diary", at Mississippi Nights in St. Louis on April 29th. The title track was immediatley featured on The Point's 'new music sunday' and 'express delivery'.

Press Reviews
simple mary's diary have released a strong 4-song CD titled whatever makes you happy. The disc has a heavy, but remarkably clean sound. All four tracks were written
by Josh Brett. Special recognition to producer Kevin
Clay for the superior aural quality here. Josh hopes the band can book time at the Broom Factory in August to
do some new, perhaps more accessible recordings. Apparently, a few record labels have been sniffing around... - CL and KR Noisy Paper
They've got their amplifiers turned up, the distortion
pedals cocked and ready to kick in, and a vocalist, in
Josh Brett, who spits out a gravelly post-Cobain tone.
But within these tight constraints are songs that weigh
a ton, songs that, because of their density, manage to
hit the mark. Their recent CD5, whatever makes you happy, contains their two best songs, the title track
and "magnetic, baby!". On both, SMD guides the big
rock through a tiny Sonic Youth blender and runs that
mix through the Afghan Whigs soul machine so that all
of the songs have just a teensy bit of skewed disso-
nance and passion to them. None of their music is
earth shattering, but all of it sounds good enough to
make the cut in the big-league rock & roll world, for
what that's worth. - RR The Riverfront Times
"......blasting tunes like "Magentic, baby," "Mourning Tragic Love" and "Holy Mother Superstar." - KCJ St. Louis Post Dispatch
Even though they've only been playing out a few months, Simple Mary's Diary has become the band to watch. Lead vocalist Josh Brett manages to be stylistically intense and earnest without indulging in the overwrought affections that have inflicted most other melodic alternarock bands. The second set grooved sustantially harder than the first. - ADL Night Times
Simple Mary's Diary is a St. Louis band that makes rock songs that'll stick in your head and withstand the weight of repeated listenings, even if these songs do remain defiantly within the realm of acceptable commercial radio fare, which is to say the band doesn't tread pathways that would land them too far outside mainstream rock music. But within those claustrophobic confines, the band thrives on banging out the rock. - RR Riverfront Times
Josh Brett debuted an all-new Simple Mary's Diary that's an order of magnitude better than the SMD we discovered many moons ago at the now-defunct (and much missed) Mudd Room. The highly proffessional outfit churned through exquisitely accessible material with most memorable melodies. - ADL Night Times
There's actually catchy pop songs under the aggresive guitars and crashing drums. Simple Mary's Diary's heavy guitars, rock-anchoring bass and indie harmonies create instrumental unity instead of chaos that tends to fuel so many alternative rock acts. - KL Riverfront Times
