What started out as a total of 12 strings, 10 fingers and two minds turned into the band that will soon be on your CD player and in your head. Tim Cohan and Shawn Murphy were the two minds that started out with their acoustic guitars, making music for music’s sake. Donning the name Not For Scholars was their tongue in cheek way of stating that they weren’t some new musical geniuses out to save the world, but a band that wanted nothing more then to write and perform for themselves and for anyone who would listen. What began as nothing more then a few jam sessions turned into something neither member ever imagined. After a few shows percussionist Tom joined Tim and Shawn. Nelson, who not only brought his bongos and congas but his harmonica and violin as well, rounded out their impressive acoustic rock sound. The college shows and coffee houses welcomed them open arms, but doing what had been done before wasn’t what the band wanted. Never fearing change and taking the next step, the trio acoustic rock band opted to plug in from time to time, and was even joined by bassist Dan Larkum to fill out their sound. Not only did NFS open for acts such as Reel Big Fish, Pete Francis of Dispatch but they soon began headlining venues in Connecticut, Boston and New York City. Yet, touring just wasn’t enough, the quintet needed something to give to their fans, an LP filled with energy, emotion and talent, yet lacking the cliché and over production that fill the air waves today. So they headed into the studio and emerged with the accomplishment of everything they set out to do, and fans we’re rewarded with their fresh sounding, self released full length, "Useless and Beautiful." With their fan base growing and a 10 track studio CD under their belt, one would think NFS would be content to keep doing what they’ve been know to do, but no, they wanted more. They craved a new sound, new songs, new fans and new doors to open. So the four piece became a five piece, with the addition of Neal Spencer on full drum set, not only did Tim, Shawn, Tom and Dan gain another way to garnish an original sound, but they also gained another humble talent who, like the rest of the band, wants nothing more then to make music for anyone and everyone. Tim Cohan, Shawn Murphy, Tom Nelson, Dan Larkum and Neal Spencer. Five musicians with the drive to become everything they never thought possible, and oddly enough, Not For Scholars turned out to be some pretty smart music after all.
