Artist description
Monoton is a five piece band from Copenhagen, Denmark. We've been around for about six years.
Basicly we're modern blues mixed with garagerock, country, metal and distorted pieces of exotic vinyl - and then some! We work hard to capture the sounds and moods messing about in our heads, find the core of the song and eliminate the unnecessary.
A unique mix of old and new makes Monoton the most innovative shot of blues you get out of Copenhagen these days. Monoton neither sounds nor looks retro - don't have a retro attitude |

Press Reviews
This albumreview was written by Keld Rud for danish monthly music-magazine GAFFA , may 2002 issue (translated):
The debut of Copenhagens Monoton is quite special. On it you find a band that has found its own little niche in the rockuniverse. The five musicians that make Monoton have gone on a mission to renew the blues. And they've succeeded quite well on "Wrong side of the rodeo", one must say. And then how do you renew a genre that rests so heavily on a set of holy and unbreakable traditions? Well, Monoton gets their inspiration from a veritable sea of genres and somehow manages to squeeze these influences into a solid and characteristic sound. A sound that undeniably has its roots in the blues, and yet is so much more and different from the blues. Garagerock, country, metal and trip-hop rears its heads through the entire album - set in a low-fi landscape of sound. The rattling and clanking expression makes me shortly think of Tom Waits. The album also has its very own dynamic. It moves through sound and darkness, silence and noise. Monotons debut is gloomy and dark, very mood-evoking and definitely worth to get to know.
This review was written by Michael Ashtar from the legendary danish Drink&Drive Magazine.
Monoton pissed me off and scared the living shit out of me at the same time on this glorious night at 1000 Fryd! They made me jump around like a fuckin’ idiot with really heavy-kick-ass-rock’n’roll-riffs! They made me slowdance with the loud-as-hell speakers to thee most evil apocalyptic blues I’ve ever heard! Hate, love lust and joy thrives in their atmospheric music. A song like “Take me home” is vicous poetry at it’s best – an ode to your x-lover or something like that. Monoton was created outta the ruins of two Copenhagen bands Fruitcake and Traktor. Later an Evil DJ entered the picture and added some psycotic vibes to the already mentally unstable soul of Monoton. Monoton is a band unlike any other. The best Denmark has yet had to offer! I know that doesn’t sound like much thinkin’ of how shitty the underground scene is in this rotten country, but belive me...these guys will kick your sorry ass into orbit!
From a review in the german online magazine Daredevil , of a gig we played with Gas Giant at Loppen, Christiania (CPH), 17th of august 2000. By Scott Heller
... The band was all dressed up in suits and ties except the drummer. They had a lead singer who played some guitar, bass (who also played guitar), drums, lead guitar player and a turntable guy. The band started with some quite laid back numbers and then things got very heavy and aggressive. The heavy songs reminded me of Ministry and the Rollins Band. All songs were very well delivered and when they had all three guitar players and the turntable guy making cool sounds it was pretty wild at times. Some very intense dark music. I look forward to seeing where these guys go... |
