Artist History
Bobby Simons was born in Richmond Va, and moved around alot as a kid.
His big break in showbiz came at age 9 when, accompanied by his mommy, he won a refridgerator and $10 bucks on the T.V. gameshow 'Truth or Consequences'.
Alas, Bob Barker failed to deliver on his empty promises of child stardom.
But Bobby did pick up a guitar in 3rd Grade, and fortunately remembered to pack it when his family got word that they were again moving; this time from icey California to sunny Chicago, Illinois.
Years of obscurity and relentless playground beatings followed in a monotonous pastiche reminiscent of the early hominid sequences of Kubrick's '2001: A Space Odyssey'.
Before you begin thinking that his guitar mythologically saves him from this tortured fate, you may want to listen to some of Bobby's tunes now. No, the ax was the only way the morose and unathletic child could possibly hope to attract the attention of females. He even tried to write songs for some of them.
Years of obscurity and relentless playground beatings by chicks followed (but he did get a bit better on guitar, and in his songwriting).
The sad parade of college and post-college barbands marched on with no hint of a record/publishing deal, and very limited radio airplay.
But then (after a much needed divorce), Bobby found himself in Chicago's very own 'Fingerjays'. Described by critics and their girlfriends as "THE LOUDEST BAND EVER", and "WHAT DID YOU SAY?", they were nonetheless signed to the indie 'Widely Distributed' label in the Spring of 1992. A CD release, "Rehearsal for Retirement", soon followed and promptly shot to nowhere.
When Bob Barker again failed to return his calls, Bobby quit 'FingerJays' and struck out (literally) in a new direction altogether. Betrayed by neo-grunge glitz and glamour, and wishing to explore musical tambres other than Volume, he formed 'Earwigs'; but when no one showed up for their scheduled band auditions, he decided to just do the blasted thing himself.
The tunes on this site are from Earwig's simultaneous debut and swansong CD, 'Crunch Pop Reflux'.
Bobby is now currently at work on new material that right now sounds remarkably like his earlier work. If you like these tunes, check back during the summer. If you don't, I bet you're sorry you read all this, huh? |
