Artist History
A love of music, a passion for excellence, and a
desire to share and communicate musical ides are
the forces which drive Steve Wheeler, one of middle
Tennessee's foremost electric and acoustic guitarists.
While growing up in Lake City, Florida, Steve was
exposed to a variety of music styles. As a young
child, he heard his sisters playing Beatles and
Beach Boys records and tuning in to the Top 40
radio stations of the day. In high school, he
began performing publicly in the Columbia High
School jazz ensemble. After graduation, he became
involved in several area hard rock and Top 40 cover
bands while attending a local community college.
He also attended a Full Sail Recording workshop,
and briefly studied jazz guitar at Jacksonville
University.
In 1985, Steve decided to move to a major recording
center to pursue a full-time music career. Finding
New York and Los Angeles too intimidating, Steve
decided to opt for Nashville, not only for the music
industry presence but for Belmont College, who at
the time was one of only a handful of colleges
offering a "music business" degree.
A series of personal setbacks forced Steve to leave
Belmont after only two years. Finding a "day job" to
make ends meet, Steve continued to work with several
area performers, including the progressive rock band
Seven, vocalist Julie Anne Piper, and country band
Carolyn and the Rhythmatics. It was this steady
work that helped Steve sharpen his playing skills
in a variety of musical styles and settings.
The 1990's brought tremendous changes to Steve's
professional and personal life. While on the road
as a computer systems trainer during the week, he
became involved with the praise and worship band
at his church, First Baptist Nashville, and later
at Crossroads Community Church. In 1996, he married
Leslie Bryson of Russellville, Arkansas and
completed his BA degree in Management and
Human Relations from Trevecca University.
His oldest daughter, Mary Katherine, was born
in 1998, and the twins, Sophie and Blair, arrived
three years later.
During this time, Steve has been focusing on
writing, arranging, engineering, and producing
original compositions. He feels, however, that
his greatest strength lies in helping other
musicians sound their best, whether it is
performing in the role of band member,
arranger, co-writer, or engineer. Currently,
Steve is seeking opportunities to perform in and
around Nashville as a band member or session
musician.
