Artist description
Pianist/vocalist Ed Alstrom and his trio (featuring the explosive and highly creative talents of Jeff Ganz on bass and Don Guinta on drums) play a bewilderingly eclectic assortment of tunes in their unique style, drawing on Broadway, blues, R&B, cabaret, standards, Classic rock, New Orleans music, novelty items, jazz, opera, quirky originals, and whatever else they can pillage and manipulate to their own ends. Harnessing the diversity and energy of a bar band, the proficiency and complexity of a jazz band, with the elegance and intimacy of a cabaret act? The music speaks most convincingly for itself.
The group has finished its first CD, entitled, appropriately, “Acid Cabaret”. This will include a solid 69 minutes of the broad scope of impressively performed music that they are starting to turn some heads with, ranging from Duke Ellington’s “Azalea”, to Mountain’s “Theme From An Imaginary Western”, to Lee Dorsey’s “People Gonna Talk”, and including some Alstrom originals. A unique and entertaining group well worth checking out!
Ed Alstrom grew up in Northern New Jersey. In addition to piano and organ, also plays guitar and bass, and has vast experience composing, conducting, recording, and gigging in the NY area and beyond. Attended Westminster Choir College in Princeton, NJ, and escaped with a B.A. in legit Organ Performance, despite playing in disco lounges nearly every night; was active as a church organist and choir director until recently.
Alstrom has performed with Bette Midler, Chuck Berry, Leonard Bernstein, Herbie Hancock, Eddie Fisher, Dion, Larry Coryell, Lou Rawls, Zubin Mehta, Donald Fagen, Uncle Floyd, Al Kooper, Stanley Jordan, and many other notables. He is currently Musical Director for Darlene Love, and also performing with Rob Paparozzi and the Hudson River Rats. Broadway experience includes “Leader Of The Pack (The Ellie Greenwich Musical)” and “Smokey Joe’s Caf”.
The “day job they tell you not to quit” is at Casio Inc. in Dover, NJ, where Alstrom is the Product Manager for the Keyboard and TV Divisions, and in charge of Accessories Purchasing. If you call Casio looking for an owner’s manual for your 10-year-old keyboard, there’s a pretty good chance you’ll unwittingly wind up on the phone with him. In addition, he has design input with R&D into the musical instruments, and has composed and arranged a lot of the music that goes into them.
