Artist History
Morris, Olec, and Rodrigo, three college
classmates from Santiago - Chile, formed
Mar de grises in the fall of 2000. The initial
purpose was to canalize through music shapes
like sadness, melancholy and other feelings
produced by the relationship that we have with
our enviroment, this was made by taking the doom
metal genere as a base for the compositions. The
band didn’t set many limits to experience with
the different styles that music offers.
Originally the band was named ‘Visions Of Regret’
and had a six-man line-up, but this was to be
over soon, due to the different music conceptions
of each member. By mid october the only members
left were the formers and with the help of Wilson
‘Chico’ Vidal on drums they created the base of
the first three songs of the band (For just an
eternity, Storm and Recklessness). During the
end of that month an excellent drummer, Arce,
joined the band and showed to be very committed
to the project. Springtime was the period in
which the members of the band acknowledged a
process of maturity, this gave an identity to
the compositions of the group. This was somehow
achieved by the instrumental flexibility that
some members have and made it easier for the band
to work as a group although the line up wasn’t
complete. The line up was completed on May of 2001
when Sergio (another classmate) joined the band
as a guitar player and Olec took possession of
the microphone. Once Sergio’s part was complete,
the band recorded a demo with four songs and now
is using it as promo for labels. The lyrics were
made in both languages, english and spanish, due
to fluid knowledge of english that Olec and Arce
have.
Now the band is working on new songs that will
hopefully be in a new and more conceptual album.

Press Reviews
It hardly ever happens that we hear about a
doom-metal act coming from another part of the
world than Europe or North-America. Apparently,
the doom scene in the rest of the world is close
to non-existing. Though every now and then, a
little spark arises from those dark dominions,
as is the case with the Chilean band
Mar de Grises, which means that, together with
doomsters Poema Arcanus two Chilean bands try to
breach out of the South-American boundaries, into
the world-wide doom scene.
This demo has been recorded with the primitive
means that are at the disposal of any underground
band with limited funds. Nevertheless, the 5
members of this young and promising band managed
to create four heavy and doomy tracks with a
distinctive own style and a rather nice
production, after not even a full year of playing
together.
The band consists of two guitar players,
backed by bass and drums, and a vocalist who also
plays keyboards. The music varies from very quiet,
atmospheric, frail and melodic stuff, to downright
brutal doom. The keyboard lines (often just piano)
are used in intro's and as addition to the guitar
melodies, not taking an upfront stance as in many
gothic-metal bands. But what I like most about
this band, are the genius vocals. Marcelo sings
(often like the vocalist from Officium Triste),
whispers, screams, grunts (very much like those
of Evoken), speaks, and all this fit exactly in
the mood of the music: passionate, emotional,
haunting. Two thumbs up for this band and what
they are doing.
Mar de Grises are heavy, atmospheric and doom.
We can only hope that someone working for a
label will see the genius of this band and
propose them a deal.
