Artist description
Tired of the same old thing? Selah's music is something new. These guys are definitely on a mission to pump fresh energy into our music world. Mixing it up in what is best described as Reggae- Funk-Rock, Selah are on to something new. Their sound carries both a rhythm, an edge, as well as a message.
It is truly hard to pin down their sound but you could say they fit into a category with the Police, the Talking Heads, or Sublime. Although their use of Reggae has less pop-rock and is more like the Jamacian originators, the music is not just reggae either. Selah's music carries a knowledge of roots, deep funk, and improvisational rock as well.
Their songwriting approach could be compared as a reggae-funk version of the Rolling Stones. Deep Layers of backbone drum & bass , a rhythm section that holds the edge without steppin on the song, hard driven, yet soulful, sometimes sticky vocals, and rootzy guitar work to frame it up. Their live shows are markedly different each night
choosing from Selah's ten years of material. The event can go for up to 4 hours as the pulse infects the crowd. By the end of the night the room comes together to become one symbiotic mass dancing and singing with the band.

Artist History
Spanning ten years in the musical underground. Mark Evangelist and Selah make up one of the most powerful groups of the day. Blending Reggae-funk with Hot rocks and a dash of Hip hop, Selah quenche the thirst of the most rabid groove Junkie..
Although Selah is in the same vein as the Clash, the Police, and Sublime, it is impossible to compare their sound. With rich history in the southeast, Selah transformed their style as they toured the area. Their relentless tour schedule and widespread fan base with little or no airplay is the key to their success.
Based out of the Blue Ridge mountains of NC, Selah's first few years were focused on Rasta influences and Reggae. The first 2 cds Jah Life Music and Chant On are a reflection of the live sound. By 97 Selah was voted Best Reggae-Rock group by Charlotte, NC Creative Loafing Magazine. Breaking from their rootzy tradition
Selah produced their third Cd Hoodanna. The intense guitar work and blending of intricate drum and bass lines resulted in a different sound as Evangelist and the group were coming into their own as songwriters.
In those later years of the 90s Selah stepped up the touring and began to perform with many national acts, Widespread Panic, Burning Spear, P-funk and Jimmy Cliff,to name a few. It was in these years that Mark found his permanent Bass partner Kevin Freeman. Freeman's rock solid style and dependibility have become a fixture in the Selah lineup..
In 2000 Selah completed their new Cd Night and Day. The cd was a real coming of age for the group it blended a little bit of the old Selah style with that of the new group The result was truly great. In late 2000 the missing link Steven Finch arrives on the scene and takes over on drums. From 2000 on Selah has toured the nation in support of the Night&Day Cd.
This year marked the ten year anniversary of the group. The tour has covered the southeast as the group revived songs of their past for old and new fans. Big things are in the groups future, new management and a recording for summer 2003 are on the horizion. Check them out on the web, in stores or at a venue near you its an experience not to be missed.. |
