Lichfield Mercury (Feb 1999)Review of 'Broken Bits' 'BIGGER THINGS FROM LITTLE ROCKERS' Lichfield favourites have come a long way since their first incarnation in 1994,when they played thrashy punk metal to a long-haired post Nirvana crowd. Their four-track E.P 'Broken Bits'shows they are honing their songwriting skills nicely, placing more emphasis on melody and structure without losing their punk roots. The opening track 'The Falling Sky' features jangly chorused guitars, soaring indie vocals and clattering drums. The song is well structured and and excellent dreamy link passage leads into a powerful ending. 'Trip Feed' is perhaps the strongest song, with chugging punk guitars and vox switching from little boy lost to the kin of primal scream Marilyn Manson would envy. 'Wrapped in Seethrough' features vocal harmonies and a strong guitar riff in the chorus, and last song 'Mr Self Destruct' features early 80's style guitars and cool lyrics. The E.P will only cost £3.00 and you can buy it from Menk Records Neon Studio's Apta House Mesnes Green Lichfield WS14 9AB Making Music(DEC 2000)review of 'Songs by Little Dipper' By Little Dippers own admission this was recorded in 'Lo-Fi hell',but despite a ropey sound this shows a lot of promise.Recorded by Rob Allen on his four track, these songs show a breadth of vision and ambition sadly lacking in most of the stuff we get in the mail. Citing influences like Flaming Lips and Radiohead isn't far off the mark, although there's more than a touch of the Pixies in the oddball arrangement of 'Dry Out'. The style of these songs really needs a band to flesh them out,but with that sorted,Little Dipper could well be ones to watch. Lichfield Mercury (July 2000)Review of 'Songs by Little Dipper' 'DIP INTO THIS FOR A REAL TREAT' IF YOU fancy something completely different, then check out Little Dipper's latest release. The new album 'Songs by Little Dipper'finds singer-songwriter heading in a totally new musical direction. Rob,who recently moved to Manchester, formed Little Dipper in 1994. Its first incarnation was a heavy alt.four piece, before mutating into a punky 3 piece and then a chilled acoustic act. Now the band has been whittled down to just Rob,who writes and records all the material himself in a small home studio. The new album is suprisingly experimental and while the sound quality isn't up to much, the songs show a maturity in Rob's style. His singing range is vast and there are plenty of vocal harmonies to illustrate this. The guitars range from alternative jangles,to bruising buzzsaws and sometimes border on the weird-sounding more like kazoo's than six stringers. Meandering basslines, unusual tempo changes and rhythms all merge to create a weird and wonderful sound. All he needs to do now is improve the sound quality of his recordings in order to reach a wider audience.
