Artist description
Radio Years was born in the fall of 2000...in the minds of Matt Kirkley and Josh Zimmer. Kirkley and Zimmer were currently on tour, as the rhythm section of The Huntingtons (playing bass and drums, respectively). They would both be leaving the band soon, and wanted to continue making music together. They had also grown tired of playing punk rock, a genre that boasts individuality and a non-conformist attitude, but actually has big musical boundaries
This band that they were forming would need more than two members, so they decided to enlist Mike Holt. Holt was one of the creators of The Huntingtons, and although he had been writing and performing pop-punk for years, his real musical interests; much like Kirkley and Zimmer's, lied elsewhere
So, they each began writing songs, and by March 2001, they were on their way to Newark, DE to record an E.P. entitled "So Long Sarcasm". They had written a total of five songs between them, and hadn't had the chance to teach each other their songs yet. The night before the recording was scheduled to begin, Zimmer and Kirkley made the six hour drive from Erie, PA to Baltimore, MD, arriving at eleven p.m. That night, between watching movies and catching up with each other, the three of them sat down with a keyboard and an acoustic guitar. They spent two hours showing each other their songs before going off to bed.
The next morning they made the one and a half hour drive to Newark, DE. When they got there they didn't run through the songs. They didn't practice anything. Josh sat behind the drum kit while Matt and Mike played the songs on a guitar. After a few minutes of the guitar playing and talking about the rhythm of the song, the drum track was laid down. They used this procedure to record all of the songs, and each of the other instruments.
Once the musical aspects of the songs were nearly complete, Josh and Mike took turns sitting in front of the keyboard. With insight from the two of them, as well as Matt and Nick, they laid down the keyboard tracks. Once all of the music was recorded, Mike had the job of laying down the vocal tracks. With the melodies still only partially developed, and one of the songs still not completed lyrically, this would be no easy task.
So, Matt and Josh went home, while Mike spent a week and a half working on melodies. He then went back to Newark and laid down the vocal tracks in one day. A few weeks later the record was mixed. This extremely unconventional way or recording was finished. Radio Years has been compared to Superdrag, Fountains of Wayne, Size 14, and Weezer, among many other bands. But why not buy the record and make your own comparison?
