Artist History
While other bands may get more attention from
the underground art-rock community, Monterey CA
natives Amphoteric are just as important in
creating a new strain of music that draws heavily
on atmospheric, progressive, art-rock and doom
metal influences with desperate, yet melodic
vocals.
Originally formed in 1998, when
vocalist Tim Thompson and bassist Andrew Nielsen
joined up with guitarist/vocalist Hart Hancock and
drummer Craig Brown. After nonstop writing and
recording, as well as a few shows, the band seemed
ready to hit the big time. In that same year,
bassist Nielsen left the band to pursue his
longtime project, Lars Horris. Singer Thompson
quickly picked up the bass and the band quickly
began performing as a three piece.
Spurred on by the possibility of a state wide tour and record
deal, Amphoteric rushed in the studio to record
2002's, Rivers of Understanding, a powerful 17
track work that features elegant and sorrowful
keyboard arrangements by Hancock as well as
full-on in your face rock tracks with painful
lyrics. Solid drumming by Brown, punchy bass
work by Thompson and hard hitting guitar by
Hancock are all highlights of the record.
In late 2002, singer Tim Thompson announced he was leaving the band to
pursue other projects. Guitarist Hart Hancock
decided to pick up the lead vocal duties and
continue on with Brown. In early 2003, bassist
Bryan Blair was brought in, and the band is
taking a new direction, writing heavier and
darker music. |
