Press Reviews
A pleasant little gem crossed my desk this week
from Spartanburg native Russell Tillitt. The
multi-talented Tillitt has done his time on the
Southeastern club circuit, first as leader of the
Gainesville, Fla. based Dingo Fish Band and then
playing organ for acid jazz powerhouse What It Is.
Currently residing in San Francisco, Tillitt has
recently written, produced and recorded a
sparkling nine-song CD, quietvibrationland.
In a Prince-like effort, Tillitt has generated a
collection of craftily forged tunes that bear
their influences right out in the open -- the
Beatles, the Beach Boys, Liz Phair (or Guided By
Voices, according to your point of reference) --
and in the very best way. It's one thing to
strive to compose songs of the caliber of
Lennon/McCartney or Brian Wilson, but it is
another thing entirely to actually achieve such
a lofty goal. Tillitt comes as close as any
mortal has a right to. While the entire album is
strong, here are a few particularly noteworthy
tracks: the brooding opener, "Tonight Needs You;"
"Losertown," a beautiful acoustic number; the
soaring, up-tempo "Daisy;" and the catchy "If I
Promised you something."
