Code 3 is a group of mostly firefighters who formed a band to have fun. A year later and headliner shows in Amarillo under their belt,Code 3 headed for the Big D to test their musical know-how. Code 3 is the type of cover band that has well over fifty songs to play. Most of these songs are a variety of 80's and 90's covers of hard rock and modern rock. Their arsenal consists of Man in the Box from Alice in Chains, Hit Me With Your Best Shot from Pat Benatar, Hot for Teacher from Van Hale and Slide by the Goo Goo Dolls. Code 3 prides themselves on replicating the exact sound from each band they cover. Code 3 played two one-hour sets at the Rock. The first set was a little laid-back and a little nervous. You could tell that these guys (and gal) had to warm themselves up to the Dallas scene. Front man Jack Bivens started off the night with a Matchbox 20 cover. As soon as they played their second cover by ZZ Top, I knew this band had a good variety; perfect for this slow Deep Ellum Night. If a patron didn't like one song, you'd bet they would go for the next one. Good way for a band to keep an audience that every club was fighting for this Friday night. Despite the fact that at times none of the keys and none of the harmonies sang by the band could be heard, Code 3 proved to be a band of qualified musicians that perfectly arrange each song. One thing you could hear, loudly, all night was drummer Travis Gibbins on his double-bass Tama Kit. This drummer played every song so perfect and solid that he could easily be a studio musician. Frontman Jack Bivins did a Huey Lewis cover with an energy level that, based on what I saw at the Wildflower Festival earlier this year, truly outdid Huey himself. I was truly impressed by the pretty keyboardist, Jenn Bivins. Jenn sang three covers through the night giving the audience a good change of pace. My favorite was Hit Me With Your Best Shot. That song was the first piece of music I ever bought for myself . I think I was eight. Her rendition of this classic was perfect, Jenn carried the same emotion and aggressiveness that I remember. The crowd roared! By the second set, this band had grown very comfortable and confident with their surroundings. Combine that with their faster, harder set, and you got a great last hour with Code 3. They played Fly Away by Lenny Kravitz as well as Play That Funky Music, completely switching from one type of music to the next, but you didn't even notice because you were having so much fun! With all the eighties guitar songs that this band covered this evening like Judas Priest and Van Halen as well as Def Leppard, guitarist Troy Couch proved himself as a well developed student of the guitar. Every guitar solo was played with the technical know-how and passion of the original players of the song. However, I wished I had another mic for this guy. I watched him sing each and every song all night long without a mic. Code 3 made an impressive beginning within the Dallas-Ft. Worth market. They even gained a few brave fans upfront for the entire second set. I'm sure they will come back. If you get a chance, (um or opportunity?) to go to Amarillo, look for this band. If not, they should be in Ft. Worth October.
