Artist History
Singer-Songwriter DAN GEDIMAN is a relative newcomer to the national music scene, but his name may already be familiar to millions of public radio listeners. As a reporter and producer, Dan's work has been heard on All Things Considered, Morning Edition, Fresh Air, Marketplace, Soundprint, Jazz Profiles and This American Life -- for whom he produced a profile of his brother, a Tom Jones impersonator, that has quickly become a public radio classic. During his 15 year radio career, Dan has won many of public broadcasting’s most prestigious awards for programs such as "Breaking The Cycle: How Do We Stop Child Abuse." But through it all, his true love has remained music. As a singer, songwriter and band-leader, Dan has been active in both the Dayton and Louisville music scenes since emigrating from the Boston area to go to college. His most recent CD, I Began To Fall, was released on ear X-tacy Records in fall 2002. His previous ear X-tacy album, I’m Trying, received airplay on AAA and Americana outlets around the country. Often placed into the Americana or alt.country genres by critics, Dan's music can defy easy classification. One writer has dubbed it "bluegrass-flavored chamber rock", others have called it "folkpop." In the wake of Dan's success as a finalist in the Kerrville New Folk Contest (past finalists include Lyle Lovett, Nanci Griffith and Steve Earle), National Public Radio called on Dan to wear both his radio and music hats simultaneously by covering the festival for their weekend newsmagazine program "Anthem." Dan's music has also been featured on two other public radio programs, "Fresh Air" and "This American Life," as part of feature stories about Dan's near-miss career as a child star. He was chosen for the first cast of public TV's hit children's series Zoom, but then let go and replaced with a female performer. Dan has shared the stage with several notable acts including Patty Griffin, James McMurtry, Dan Bern, Alex Chilton, The Connells, and Blue Rodeo. He was also a finalist in the Napa Valley Music Festival's Emerging Songwriter Showcase. His previous albums have included Out Of The Darkness (duets with Peter Searcy, former lead singer for Squirrel Bait) and Something Big. Dan is also a print journalist whose work has been featured in several publications.
