Here I Am

Strummer boy guitar + harmonica rack + strained voice. Truisms and
third person observations. It's a solo act formula that's been all
around us since Bob Dylan was the age he tried to tell Columbia
Records he was when he lied to try to weasel out of a contract. It
was with us before that, but we thought it was there from necessity
rather than choice. Dylan made it stylish, and his huge shadow has
kept it stylish.
Jason Shain's a lousy Dylan impersonator, though. Poor guy, he can
actually sing, and his guitar and harmonica work are solid, if simple.
Young Dylan often sounded all too willing to jettison meter, tuning
and precision for the sake of getting the words out while they were
still angry hot. Mr. Shain's cooler; just as angry, but he's taken
some time to sharpen the knife with which he dissects the world we
live in.
Notice my difficulty in reviewing Mr. Shain rather than the giant he
brings to mind. Let me assure you that the effort of jumping over
Dylan's shadow and really getting into Shain's observations is quite
worthwhile. A long car trip without preoccupations is an ideal
setting in which to make his acquaintance.
Especially a trip home.
