Domenick Filopei -- New York based Producer
If you have ever met Domenick Filopei, you know he can have a lasting affect on you. Whether he is causing havoc on the local club scene or tearing it up in the studio, Domenick Filopei is going to be a name that people will remember in the electronic music industry. He quotes, I was always involved in music in someway or another throughout my life. From playing the piano at age 6 to the guitar at age 11 to scoring a full high school musical at age 16, music has always been an important part of my life.It was not until he was 18 years old that Filopei stepped into his first real club.It was all the loud music and the crazy stuff going on in the Tunnel that got me into the whole club scene.
Domenick went to clubs for almost two years before he became really bored with them. I mean I had alot of fun meeting new people but I decided to take my musical ability and work it into the trance and house scene.
In early 2000 he finished a bunch of tracks that one could call decent but nothing exceptional. But as he learned the equipment better and listened to more trance music he slowly started to figure out just what the other guys were doing. Once I had completed three solid tracks I took them to some local DJ's to get them played. I had my tracks played by Vicious on the floor of Tunnel, the floors of Limelight, Palladium, and Club Premiere in Connecticut. But then I kind of realized whats the point of just playing my music when I can control the whole scene like these DJ's were--and do it better.
Domenick and a friend chipped in for a set of Gemini turntables. It worked out good because his friend Claudio lived two seconds from him so he could spin when he wanted. I picked up the whole idea of beatmatching pretty quickly. And I already knew what records to drop and when to drop them. So from there I just kind of took off.
Eventually he bought his own set of Technics after spinning with the Geminis for a month. I was only spinning two months and I booked my firstclub in Connecticut called Club 2k1 with the help of a friend who promoted there. Although it was my first time ever spinning a club or let alone a main floor, no one seemed to believe it.
I immediately went into the studio and began work on a demo cd to sell. That is where I came up with the tranceformations mix. It was a mix of progressive trance that seemed to flow one into another.
I kept thinking people need a cd to listen to, not to try and recreate the main floor of Sound Factory at 2 in the morning. It just couldn’t happen no matter what songs you put on there. No car or house stereo could recreate the volume of a club.
Within a few weeks of the CD completion, DF had secured a position in the Limelight weekly in the Geiger room.
They even moved me to main floor once to open for Alan Sacks because there happen to be an opening that night on the main. It was funny because I was talking to Sacks and he’s like how long are you spinning, and I told him 3 months and he says your pretty good to be doing the main floor of Limelight only spinning 3 months. I do not think he believed me, but its not like I have any reason to lie to people. I mean I think I am a decent DJ but lets see where I am in one year--because if I can manage to rock the main floor of NYC clubs at 3 months imagine at 12. |
