Artist description
from review on SPLENDID.COM - Joshua Gabriel is one of those guys who is possessed of a vision, who knows what he wants to hear and By God is going to create it. Gabriel is a turntablist/multi-instrumentalist who leans heavily on soulful vocal samples and constantly-changing instrumentation, builds, digressions and loops in order to create a very original sound in a genre that is filled with ripoffs of ripoffs of ripoffs.
from review in MIXER MAGAZINE - This guy does it all - he’s battled a robot DJ (and won), designs all his own sleeve-work with his intricate maze-like line drawings and plays the bongos while he DJs. His second EP shows his artistic diversity, melding hip-hop, trip-hop, chill drum n bass, and tribal drumming. Movement No. II is organic electronic music that’s thoughtful, intelligent, and different.

Artist History
After many years playing guitar and then drums in various bands, i began to teach myself to produce tracks and play the turntables in 1998. I started out spinning drum n bass w/hip-hop, with my own tracks being obsessive sound collages ala DJ shadow, Tricky. My first EP of original songs MOVEMENT NO. I received heavy college radio play and charted at 17 stations, including #1 at WLFR in NJ. My second EP of original songs MOVEMENT NO. II received airplay at over 300 stations and charted at 37 sollege stations. It was a staff pick in VIBE magazine and garnered feature stories in the NEW YORK PRESS and FRANK 151 MAGAZINE, as well as many raving reviews in magazines like MIXER and GROOVES. In 2001 i was picked to play at the CMJ Music Marathon and was a runner-up in the BPM MAGAZINE mixtape contest. In 2002 i did my first small tour of the west coast, and did many a college show around the country. i have also had 3 solo exhibitions of my artwork and my first film VIDEO 1 was accepted into 6 film festivals. Currently I have a weekly gig in Williamsburg , Brooklyn and I am workingon my debut full-length album and my second short film. |
