    Artist History
We'll start our story on March 18, 2002, when aspiring musician and Christopher Newport University student Marshall Camden posted a message on a local internet messageboard. Marshall was trying to start releasing music publicly but felt his work would be more suited to female voice than his own. Replies were requested from any female vocalists in the area's Gothic/Industrial scene who were interested. Among a few replies that didn't seem to have much potential, a private message was received from an Edna Moore. After a few months they finally got together and recorded vocals for "Requiem Waltz," what was to be the first published work of Void Stares Back. The chemistry between Edna and Marshall was almost instant. Being older by eight years, Edna had both the life experience and the musical knowledge to give the project its needed life and vitality. Having a working lineup also gave Marshall the necessary push to refine his instrumentation, as well as a vocal style around which to build his own instrumentally. "Requiem Waltz" was subsequently included on Dark Assembly Vol. 2, a Virginia Goth/Industrial music compilation. The next year or so saw Edna and Marshall struggling to work their newfound musical compatibility into their respectively busy lives. Music was released on mp3.com on a song-by-song basis, since living an hour apart made each finished work seem almost monumental and worthy of immediate publication. By November of 2002 Marshall had quit school in order to devote more attention to the project, and on February 13th of 2003 Void Stares Back made their first live appearance to a welcoming crowd at The Abyss in Virginia Beach. However, it wasn't until September of that year that Void Stares Back were able to independently release their first published work, Fraction. Even at only five songs, it brought them full circle to the mindset of being an actual working band.
